Spend the money for the Canon one,

I'm sure some people are satisfied with this lens hood, but personally, I think you should spend the extra money and get the real Canon one that attaches via the quick release notches instead of screwing into the front of the lens or lens filter. With this one, it's kind of a pain to put on and take off since the threads on the lens or filter are very fine and you can't rush it or you might mess up the threading. I'm also not too impressed with the cheap feeling plastic material it is made out of.

Although the price is low, the quality is pretty bad. The edge is not smooth even. When screwing onto the lens, it's too tight to adjust to a perfect position, also the black color can fade and make the lens thread very dirty. Pay some more and get the real canon one or just save this 10 bucks.

I 'm as much at fault for purchasing this lens hood as the manufacturer is for selling it. It's a cheap knockoff of the Canon slip notch lens hood. Spend the extra cash on the Canon. Don't bother kidding yourself and spending the money on the Opteka. I even read the reviews and thought, it can't be that bad and the price was great!. You get what you pay for. On the three Canon lenses I have, I can only screw this cover on about 1/8 of the way, and 9/10 it's on cross threaded. I'm afraid of damaging the threads on my lens. It's not worth the cost of shipping to return it so it will collect dust in a corner somewhere until it gets tossed out with the trash. Think quality and longevity, not price!!

It's a cheap lens hood. I should have spent more to get one that works better. Using it with the 18-55mm kit lens + UV filter on my Canon XSi, the lens is visible while zoomed out to ~18-22mm. Past 22mm it's not visible, but it's annoying to not have the entire field of view that the lens affords me. The threads are cheap and it screws on pretty roughly, such that I am worried about damaging the threads on my UV filter. The plastic is cheap. The adjustment ring, while it's nice that it's there, is cheap. It does the job, but it's annoying. Do yourself a favor and buy a nicer hood.

This lens hood was not easy to mount on the lens and because it's plastic the screw threads could be damaged.

This filter works fine for a lot less than the dedicated canon filter. My only wish would be a twist on mount instead of a threaded one.

This hood caught your eye because of the very cheap price, and frankly looks quite professional in the photos. It functions as it should. The material it's made of seems brittle. The lock ring cracked on both hoods on their second use.

A Nice Lens Hood - Good Price,

Eforcity and other Amazon.com vendors sell this same 58mm Tulip hood under many different names, at prices ranging from around $2 up to around $10. Regardless of their name, all of the Tulip hoods with 58mm threading and a rotating wheel lock appear functionally identical.
This Tulip hood is designed for wide angle and zoom lenses that are about 35mm to 40mm wide (you may have to convert your digital lens to its film equivalent to know its width...a digital camera that is 6mm wide may be a 35mm width equivalent). If you use the hood with a wider lense, such as a 24mm or 28mm, you are likely to see a bit of the hood in the corner of your photos, until you zoom out a bit to around 35mm. And, you can NOT use this hood if the lens threads on your camera rotate when you focus, as it will go out of alignment. And, the hood WILL cast a shadow on your photos with most cameras...so rotate it so a small petal is at 12 o'clock for flash photos. It takes several minutes to correctly thread the hood onto your 58mm filter threads, align the hood and rotate its adjusting wheel until it locks into proper position. Waaay too much work to do every time you pick up the camera. I am leaving the hood on permanently, as my 58mm lens cap snaps securely into the throat of the hood, and the camera with hood on fits nicely into its carrying bag.

This hood does a fabulous job as a protective device and as a shade for lighting issues across the lens.
I got my Canon EOS Rebel XSI as a gift and it came with a great 18-55mm lens. The hood is actually in the way for vertical and standard distant flash shots. This is no fault of the hood. It should probably be used on a longer lens.

I ordered a opteka lens hood that turned out to be faulty. I was greatly disappointed. I wrote an e-mail to Amazon and in turn was contacted by the shipper telling me a new one was on the way. It arrived in good condition and works fine. Am now a happy camper!! Thank You...........R
