5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product, works perfectly on Sony NEX-5!
I would highly recommend this remote to anyone looking for a simple, easy to use, lightweight controller.

I was hesitant at first to purchase this "less expensive" remote for my brand-new Sony NEX-5 camera but figured that I would give it a shot. It's half the price of the Sony remote commander (which has tons of useless buttons I'll never use). I only...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good product - TERRIBLE instructions
I bought the Opteka RC-3 Infrared Remote Control through my wife's Amazon account, to use with my Sony Alpha 700. The skimpy instruction sheet that came with the control is cryptic and at first I could not get the control to work.

After removing "the plastic separator in the battery compartment, The sheet says 2 "Turn on the camera"; I did.

The sheet says 3 "Turn your camera in quick response mode"; I have no clue what this means but it is irrelevant, because what you have to do is press the "DRIVE" button on top of the camera body to access the different Drive modes on the camera's LCD monitor.

The sheet says 4 "Toggle between the different settings using left and right arrow. What you need to do is use the camera's multi-selector to toggle ALL THE WAY DOWN on the Drive mode screen to the "Remote Commander" setting, then press the multi-selector to accept and exit.

Once this process is completed, the remote works like a charm. The product's price/value is good and I would have rated it 4 or five stars if it was not for the poor instructions and lack of online support.

This works absolutely PERFECTLY with my NEX-5. All I did was unpackage it, pull out the battery protection tab, set the camera to remote control mode, and both the buttons (the "take a picture now" and the 2-second delay button) worked just as they should! I'm very happy with my purchase!

i own the new sony A55, and one must go into the function menu to change the shooting mode to remote in order to get this to work...that was not explained in the directions....

my main purpose for using this remote was for timed exposures and studio close up work....being as this works much like a tv remote, sometimes i have to reach in front of the camera and point it at the front to get it to work, a little awkward.....but it works as described for the A55...i have another type remote for my older sony dslr's that work off radio waves and can be used behind walls for instance...but one can not beat the price on this remote......

Opteka Wireless remote for Sony A55 good price, works well when you are infront of camera but spotty when you're behind or to the side.
but for the price it's great..

Bought this for operating the shutter on my NEX-5N. I don't see why you would ever need all those extra buttons on the Sony remote, the only thing I need to operate remotely on the camera is the shutter during long exposures in bulb mode to prevent camera shake. The instructions state the max range is 16 feet, but if you are facing the IR sensor it will work beyond 25 feet. Definitely works as intended.

Hi,
Recently I purchased this remote but not able to use it. I have a sony alpha 230 DSLR. I'm not able to configure the remote to work with my camera. The instructions I got from the remote package didn't help either.
I'm rating LOW because proper instructions are not given.
Once I find the remote working, I will re-rate this product.

Works perfectly on my Sony NEX 5. Almost spent too much on more advanced model. All I needed was shutter release. Works great, however, you must aim from side or front.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT buy!, March 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Opteka RC-3 Wireless Remote Control for Sony Alpha A33, A55, NEX-5, A230, A330, A380, A390, A450, A500, A550, A560, A580, A700, A850, A900 (RMT-DSLR1 Replacement) (Electronics)
I purchased the Opteka RC-3 remote control for use with my Sony A230. I had read several reviews that said that it would work but I did not know for sure. I looked at it this way it was only 15 bucks on a gift card with shipping so if it does not work than I haven't lost much. So I pulled the trigger and ordered it.

It arrived in good time and took no time at all to get it open and to see if it works.

If you have read other reviews than I will agree with them that the instructions are horrible but here is how it works right out of the box.

1. Unpackage the remote (remember to pull the tab out of the battery compartment)
2. Set your camera to Remote Commander setting
3. Press one of the 2 buttons.
4. Enjoy you picture.

It is that simple and it works like a charm. I LOVE IT!
