Optica

Following their 2010 album Work, Adam, Bebban, Ted, Carl, and Eric headed out on their most successful tour ever and then returned home to their own pursuits. Families were expanded, side projects were launched, and homes outside of Stockholm were explored. Editorial Reviews

Shout Out Louds took their time with these songs, recording for about 1.5 years in a small Stockholm studio and producing themselves for the first time with help from Johannes Berglund. A theme emerged and Optica was born, an album celebrating color and light from a band confident in its sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Frosted pop: sweet. light, and wondrously delicious February 27, 2013
Format:Audio CD
2007's "Our Ill Wills" marked a high point for me for Scandanavian pop--it was a perfect blend of "Head on the Door" era Cure and Johnny Marr influenced guitar wonder, all put together with a mix of panache and heartbreak. After that album, I wanted to embrace their follow up "Work", but it was a little more of a glum affair without any relief, and although I enjoyed it, it didn't have the same longevity with me. I approached Optica with a little more trepidation--would this be more "Work"? Or something else? I am happy to report that this has all the sass and sweetness of "Our Ill Wills" but has also gained an even lighter touch with production, never sounding cloying or downtrodden, and by the same token, avoiding an overly precious wrong turn as well. This album does what well done pop is supposed to do--it gets into your brain and your heart, starts your fingers snapping, and next thing you know you are singing along to songs you have only heard once. Now, that is not to say that all the lyrics are about bunnies and rainbows--we are still talking about a band that does heartbreak like it should be done--sweet and bitter enough to break your heart all over again. But somehow, hearing it from these guys makes the pain sweet, the nostalgia for things lost somehow brighter, and the hope to carry on a little easier. It's a wonderful ride, and a great example of indie pop at its finest.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Music You are Looking For March 3, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I buy a lot of music. Most of it is just mediocre, or worse. But I keep buying in hopes that I will find one of those rare CD's that really catches my ear and reminds me of why I keep searching for new music. This record is solid and listenable from the first time through, but grows on you with repeated listening. When I listen to it, I hear echoes of The National, The Cure, Tears for Fears. But mostly I hear accomplished musicians comfortable and confident inside their own music. Layered and complex, without being obscure and inaccessible. Buy this one. You won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love, love, love this CD! March 21, 2013
Format:Audio CD
When I get a new CD, I usually play it in my office while I work. This CD has attracted a lot of attention. Everyone who comes in and sits on the couch next to the player, stops talking and asks what is playing. I really love "Our Ill Wills" but this one is something special. I have been transferring the CD between my office and my car. The music is a great blend of The Cure and Thompson Twins, two bands I adore, and Shout Out Louds sensibility. There isn't a song on the CD that isn't enjoyable to me. I am really impressed with this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A few amazing tracks, a few average tracks. November 26, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
SOL has definitely been refining their sound, and this is probably their heaviest "produced" sound yet. But if you've been a fan for some time, you'll still hear some characteristic moments. A few amazing tracks, a few average tracks. Overall, worth a listen with an open mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Newer Bands I've Heard Lately October 22, 2013
By Cosmos
Format:Audio CD
I first heard The Shout Out Louds through one of Amazon's free music samplers which Amazon has many good free ones to sample newer music. I found out about these guys from one of those samplers and the song on the sampler was "illusions". I really like this song so I took a chance and bought the album. With so much music to choose out there, and i have tons of music, this band and album are really refreshing! It's nice to hear music like this in such a dull musical decade. A lot of their music reminds me of The Cure, Peter Gabriel, Simple Minds, The Human League, and several others is what comes to mind while listening to their album. i know some of these 80's bands are dated BUT The Shout Out Louds are fresh and new, whether they mean it or not, adding a modern twist to this decade in music...almost making a new mark in music for the teen decade (2010-2013's to 2019). Pick this gem up and enjoy.
