For it's price range this camera is good value. You'll find that everything you need for a simple digital camera is supplied in the one purchase. The astracam has 640 x 480 image resolution that looks better than the Sony floppy disk based mavica range which compress a lot more than the astracam. It also has USB support which a lot of digital cameras in this price range do not have. It is simple to use. Just point and shoot and file management can also be done thru the camera. A nice little feature is that the astracam has a little switcher that allows it to be used as an ordinary Video for windows motion video device ..ie as a webcam altho there's no software included for this. But MS Netmeeting should work fine with the astracam in this mode. And oh it can also make voice recordings.

The only thing annoying abut the astracam is it's image framing capabilities. The viewfinder is bigger than what is actually being photographed. And there is no inner frame markings to show you what you actually going to get when you click the shutter. So you have to remember to leave a "border" around your image when taking pictures. But then some high priced cameras have this problem too. So practice heaps before you take serious pictures or else you might get annoyed when you find part of your picture being cropped. The only other drawback of the astracam is that it doesnt come with a flash. So indoor photography is just fair.

But if you're looking for a lowcost driveaway digicam that is easy to use the astracam is a fairly good buy.

Yes, I thought the AstraCam was pretty cheap considering what you could do with it, but in less than 9 months it broke. THe camera is now useless and I've been told by customer support that it's a defective camera. THat's it...no offer to fix or replace it. It's a total waste of money even if you think you are getting a deal.

do not buy umax products... it is a total waste of money.
most of the time the drivers and software provided by the company does not work with the operating system you are using. in order for it to work properly you must go to their web site and download a patch that supposed to fix the problem but instead the patch conflicts with other softeware such as camera software or even the operating system (one more thing the drivers and patches at their website are not free).
I wrote to umax and they have never responded to any of the emails i have sent to them. I decided to call the support center and I was refered back to the website to download another patch. (very bad customer support)
