5.0 out of 5 stars Works for the First-Gen Miata
Installed this battery ("R" means reverse polarity) in my 1992 Miata this morning and it fit well. It's maybe an inch taller than the Westco battery or OEM Panasonic battery, so I had to extend the threaded rod that holds the top bracket, but otherwise it went in easily and the polarity was correct. The car fired right up, so I'm happy so far. I'll post again if I have...

1.0 out of 5 stars Only a 30-day warranty
My D51R went bad after a month. Optima says take it back to whom you purchased it from. I said Amazon, they said "oh no." Optima will not honor the 36 Month Warranty and Amazon said I'm stuck because I can't ship it back -it's hazardous material and it's beyond the 30 day return policy. "We are real sorry, but there's nothing we can do." So if you are going to buy a...

I also have a Honda (a Civic), and this battery died after 15 months !
I also bought it through Amazon, and the warranty's no good.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS BATTERY ! There's a lot better & cheaper, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great....but not quite perfect, December 20, 2008

The description of this battery stated that it was made to fit Honda Civics specifically, which is the application that I wanted it for. The only problem is that the top is contoured in such a way that the top mounting bracket does not fit properly and a shim must be made so that the clamp will clamp and not slide back and forth and side to side.

I chose this battery over the Odyssey which had better cca for pole orientation. Optima kept the terminals on top so that my stock connectors could be used, with the Odyssey they would have to be modified.

Taller and heavier than the original battery in my 1996 Miata but fits fine. Need a longer J bolt but they are cheap and easy to get. Lots of cranking power. Only time will tell how long it lasts.

I bought this battery and I only had it for a short period of time, but I have a Subwoofer in the trunk of my car and I just pound it at full volume and while car is off. They say it lasts 66 mins so I just play my music for about an hour and then car starts right up.

NOT MUCH INFO ONLINE, SO HUNTED DOWN AT AUTO PARTS STORE TO GET MORE SPECS.
THEN CAME BACK ONLINE CAUSE IT WAS BEST PRICE.

WOULD BUY FROM DEALER AGAIN, BUT WOULD LIKE THEM TO GIVE MORE DETAIL ABOUT PRODUCT. IE USE, OTHER THEN BOAT OR AUTO RACE CAR.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on this battery -- it's dreadful, June 13, 2009

This review is from: Optima Batteries 8073-167 D51R YellowTop Dual Purpose Battery (Misc.)
I have a Honda S2000, which is tough on batteries, especially when the car is not driven often, which is the case for mine, since I only drive it in fair weather. I've had the car since 2001, and I've been through several brands of batteries, so I have good comparative experience.

My car is stored outside under a cover during the winter, which is a good test for battery cold starting power and general overall performance. The Optima Yellow Top fails on all accounts. Compared to the Sears Diehard Gold, which costs much, much less, the Optima's performance has been terrible. With the Optima, if my car sat for two weeks without a start, I would have to jump start the car. Not so with the Diehard.

So my advice is simple: don't waste your precious dollars on an Optima. I just bought a Die Hard to replace it, and the Optima is going into the junk heap. Under my very taxing starting and driving conditions the Optima is worthless and a whole lot of trouble to boot.
