Editorial Reviews

The second release from the Ross Hammond Trio. With bassist Gerry Pineda and Drummer Tom Monson, the three create organic sounds from Bop to 12-tone music. Optimism was recorded in a single afternoon in engineer Chema Salinas’ living room. The recording was made live, and mixed directly into a laptop. There were no overdubs or multiple takes. Regarding the recording, Hammond states, "the idea I had was to simply capture the sound of the trio when we play live. I suppose I’d call it a very honest recording."

This review is from: Optimism (Audio CD)
Optimism is an outstanding work by The Ross Hammond Trio!

Each song creates its own atmosphere, and those atmospheres create spaces that surround the listener and allow him to more completely experience the composition.

Tom Monson's drum work is always well-thought. He knows when to be subtle and tasty, and he knows when to turn up the intensity and cut loose.

Jerry Pineda's bass moves fluidly between augmenting the guitar and drums and creating it's own atmopheres that add to the compositions and make them fuller.

Ross Hammond's guitar moves fluidly from gentle, to assertive, to flat-out intense. Hammond also creates wonderful atmospheres that create a space where intense jazz has open spaces that draw in the listener.

Listen to Optimism and you can't help but wonder if you're witnessing the birth of a significant presence in jazz!
