About the Author

Jizhong Zhu is Principal Power Systems Engineer in the Power Systems Application Group with AREVA T&D SA. In addition to his industry experience, Dr. Zhu has also worked at Howard University in Washington, D.C., the National University of Singapore, Brunel University in England, and Chongqing University in China. A Senior Member of the IEEE and an honorable advisory professor of Chongqing University, he has published more than sixty papers in international journals as well as three books. His research interest is in the analysis, operation, planning, and control of power systems.

More About the Author

Jizhong Zhu is currently working at ALSTOM Grid as a Senior Principal Power Systems Engineer and Senior Expert. He became a Fellow of Alstom Expert Committee in 2013. He received his Ph.D. degree from Chongqing University, P.R. China, in Feb. 1990. Dr. Zhu was a full professor in Chongqing University. He won the "Science and Technology Progress Award of State Education Committee of China" in 1992 and 1995, respectively, "Sichuan Provincial Science and Technology Advancement Award" in 1992, 1993 and 1994, respectively, as well as the "Science and Technology Invention Prize of Science Province Science & Technology Association" in 1992. Dr. Zhu was awarded as an Excellent Young Teacher by Chongqing City Government in 1992, selected as an Outstanding Science & Technology Researcher and won annual Science & Technology Medal of Sichuan Province in 1993. He was also selected as one of four outstanding young scientists working in China by The Royal Society of UK and China Science & Technology Association and awarded Royal Society Fellowship in 1994 and the national research prize "Fok Ying-Tung Excellent Young Teacher Medal" in 1996. He worked in a variety of places all over the world, including Chongqing University in China, Brunel University in UK, National University of Singapore, Howard University in USA, and ALSTOM Grid Inc. (since 2000). He is also an advisory professor at Chongqing University. His research interest is in the analysis, operation, planning and control of power systems, as well as renewable energy applications. He has published six books as an author and co-author, and published about 200 papers in the international journals and conferences.

This book was very informative and provided a good insight into power systems. I have used the information that I have learned in this book in my last project and it helped give me more perspective as a project manager.

I found this book on a recommended list for learning power systems and this definitely helped me learn a lot of concepts on power system operations and analysis. Although the book addresses the optimization applications of power system operation, and is better for graduate level, some chapters in the book are still good for undergraduate students like the ones covering power flow analysis and classic economic dispatch. The basic concepts are well explained, the mathematics shown are pretty clear too. I have learned power system basics (especially power flow calculations and sensitivity calculations) through this book during my senior year of college. If you are in need of a reference book for understanding power systems better, I definitely would suggest buying this book.

This is a comprehensive book on power system optimization. The material is systematically developed, which provides a solid foundation in various aspects of power system operation and analysis. This book covers not only traditional methods and implementation in power system operation, but also new technologies and their implementation in power system operation in last decade. In addition to have the rich analysis and implementation of all kinds of approaches, this book contains many hand-on experiences for solving power system operation problems.

This book is ideally suited for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in electrical and power engineering. It is also an excellent reference book for the people who are interested in the field of power systems.
