5.0 out of 5 stars It Makes a Difference, June 16, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Optimum Nutrition for the Mind: Learn How to Boost Your IQ, Improve Your Mood and Emotional Stability, Sharpen Your Memory, and Keep Your Mind Young (Paperback)
Picked this up in the airport on yet another frenetic trip. I'd been having problems with memory loss: work very stressful, home very stressful - the usual. Thought, "Hmmm, Maybe all the chips and chocolate isn't the answer."

This book put it all in perspective. It was easy to dip in and read the bits that applied to me. I made some basic changes - just one at first (gave up coffee) then more (more fish, better vitamins, less fried food). Years of poor nutrition had made me forget what it's like to feel good.

Highly recommended - clearly written, easy to understand, this book could really make a difference in your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for everyone, October 31, 2006

This review is from: Optimum Nutrition for the Mind: Learn How to Boost Your IQ, Improve Your Mood and Emotional Stability, Sharpen Your Memory, and Keep Your Mind Young (Paperback)
This book and the book "Optimum Nutrition For Your Child's Mind" by the same author are fantastic. They clearly outline how your brain works and what it needs in order to function at top level. In the U.S. people tend to pop a pill for whatever ails them but all they are doing is covering up the real problems and creating new ones. These books will open your eyes to how ridiculous it is for doctors to prescribe a potentially dangerous pill without first testing your biochemistry and searching for a cause that can be treated naturally.

4.0 out of 5 stars Having a healthy mind and feeling great !, August 4, 2006
This review is from: Optimum Nutrition for the Mind: Learn How to Boost Your IQ, Improve Your Mood and Emotional Stability, Sharpen Your Memory, and Keep Your Mind Young (Paperback)
Like most people, I love sugar, carbs (not the good ones) and just about every other ingredient that is brain toxic. When I first purchased this book, I was absolutely dreading changing my eating habits. But once I began eating according to Patrick Holford's recommendations, I noticed results immediately. Replacing fried foods with a nice salmon steak and veggies is not as hard as I had imagined!

This book is clearly written and has undoubtedly improved my life. To supplement eating right, I also joined a fitness club for the mind at Agogus.com - which is a great for your mental fitness. My mental clarity has increased dramatically, my memory has improved, and I am healthier mentally and physically. So, between eating brain-nourishing food and joining a club that literally works out my brain, I have never felt better - I recommend this lifestyle change to everyone!

4.0 out of 5 stars Linking Diet, Mind, Body and Environment, December 2, 2009

J.W.K (Nagano, Japan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Optimum Nutrition for the Mind: Learn How to Boost Your IQ, Improve Your Mood and Emotional Stability, Sharpen Your Memory, and Keep Your Mind Young (Paperback)
I picked up the first edition of this book in 2002 on a whim, while at the airport in Kuala Lumpur - before the book was even available in the US market. I bought it, not because I wanted to learn about how dietary choices might increase my IQ (because, after all, how can you improve upon perfection? ;), but because I wanted to understand how food might affect my mental and physical health.

Although I cannot say whether or not all of Patrick Holford's claims about mega-dosing certain vitamins are scientifically accurate (after all, as I later came to find out, the man is an entrepreneur and nutritional consultant - not a nutritionist), the book revolutionized the way I think about food, body, mind, environment and overall health and well-being.

Before reading Holford, I never imagined that depression, dyslexia, chronic stress, anxiety, schizophrenia, ADDHD, and many other mental and physical problems might partly stem from a faulty diet. I never realized that there might be a connection between relative intelligence and what we eat. I never thought our mood might be a produce of meals. And for that, I thank Holford.

For those of you who would feel more comfortable learning about this fascinating subject from a accredited medical professional, I recommend The Brain Diet: The Connection Between Nutrition, Mental Health, and Intelligence, by Dr. Alan Logan (2007). Like Holford before hime, Logan shows how diet is underlying factor of many medical conditions, such as depression, anxiety, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, migraine headaches, ADHD, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars My persoanl experience says it works, September 28, 2008

The book includes numerous suggestions for providing better nutrition for one's brain and thus the mind. While I follow a fairly good nutrition program, Holford provides new nutrition facts that have allowed me to take a healthy brain to an even better level. After a few weeks of taking some of the recommended supplements I've been able to measure a higher level of problem solving and memory. I will continue to ad Holford's recommendations to my diet.

If you have tried to read other nutritional info books & got overwhelmed and frustrated, this is one for you. I've actually READ much of it and I'm retaining a lot more from this book than I could from others.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to the real scoop on all the garbage we're putting in our bodies (and our kids' bodies).

Life changing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Brain Nutrition book in the Market, June 22, 2009
This review is from: Optimum Nutrition for the Mind: Learn How to Boost Your IQ, Improve Your Mood and Emotional Stability, Sharpen Your Memory, and Keep Your Mind Young (Paperback)
Guys, this book is the bible if you care about your brain. Don't assume that because you are breathing, worrying about your daily chores or smiling at a fellow passenger that your brain is functioning to the best of it's ability. This book along with Dr. Amen's and Dr. Julia Ross's work is important for all to know. Take advantage of the cutting edge work in this field. Your family doctor typically has a lot of catch-up to do. Your education is paramount. I highly recommed this book.
