I started out with an Optoma DV10 that sat on a center table and projected to the screen at an angle very close to the viewer's eye level. This works well for the grey hawk / optoma 92. I had made a screen using material purchased at a fabric store which material is commonly used for backing curtains. I found the plans online. My homemade screen worked well but still the overall picture was lacking clarity, color balance and that "theater look". After researching for weeks, browsing many sites, I decided on this one. I couldn't be happier. The picture is phenominal. I use a Sony VOL-HS20 projectof for TV and DVD. When using an HD signal football games are out of this world. DVDs are great as well. I highly reccomend this product as an inexpensive yet high quality screen for home theater.

4.0 out of 5 stars Movies on the big screen are cool!, June 8, 2007
This review is from: Optoma DS-GWII9092P 92-Inch Manual Pull Down Projector Screen (Electronics)
I purchased this 92" screen as part of a budget-minded system. Ok, let's just call it cheap. It includes an Optoma HD70 projector & Oppo DVD player. I give the product a high rating because of its value. I just could not justify spending $500 and up for my 1st screen. I can always hop onto the upgrade-treadmill later. So far, I must say that it is a fantastic experience watching movies at home on such a big screen. I compared the image projected onto the screen vs. the wall alone and I highly recommend getting any kind of screen you can afford as the picture will be so much better. In my case, I am able to get the room very dark and I find any white images to be almost too sparkly. In hind sight, I would have gotten a low-gain screen instead. This one has a gain of 1.8 which I didn't realize at the time could have been too much. I also notice a couple of undulations or ripples on the lower right corner of the screen which I can't seem to get rid of. They are only visible at a very sharp viewing angle and don't bother me at all during movie time. My overall enthusiasm toward having a home theater probably has as much to do with my recommendation than the product, itself, but what can I say? My wife & I love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very solid build quality, January 24, 2008

This is a very well made manual screen. I have used it for about a month now and so far, it has performed extremely well. When I installed the screen and pulled it down for the first time, there was a plastic sheet fixed to the innermost section of the screen. This is meant to be removed, but there is a `sticky' bar at the top of the viewing area that produced a significant out-gassing of the adhesive materials. The smell from the glue was quite strong at first and was still noticible for about a week or so. Now i is no longer an issue and that was my only negative comment on this great product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great budget orientated screen, January 11, 2008
This review is from: Optoma DS-GWII9092P 92-Inch Manual Pull Down Projector Screen (Electronics)
I had this screen for about a week. Good price to performance ratio. It looks fantastic in my main living room which where have trouble controlling ambient light. I am very pleased with the way it looks, but there are some drawbacks.

The drawbacks are the screen does have some wavy parts which means if you sitting way below the screen, the image can have a wavy horizontal lines (on tickers for instance). If the screen is barely above your head this eliminates most of that effect. Also when the camera pans, you'll notice the wave effect more. There are higher end screens that are tensioned to eliminate that effect.

The way they choose to retract the screen seems flawed. It isn't too bad when you get the hang of it, but at first you think the mechanism if broken. You really have to pull down and then lift up the screen very quickly. If you do it slow at all it will catch and you'll have to try again. I've gotten where I can retract the screen in one or two tries. Optoma/Panoview should have just put a button on the case which released the screen to roll it up.

If you sit too close the glass beads on the screen do give you a sparkle effect. In that case move your sitting position back and that will be eliminated. From 8.5 feet is the minimum you can sit in my experience. If you sit closer you'll see sparkles. To be on the safe side I'd say 9 feet.

I'm using the screen with a Optoma HD7100 and I'm quite satisfied considering the price of the screen. If I do have a dedicated HT where I can place a mounted screen, it probably would be a better way to go to eliminate the wave effect. Not to mention it looks nicer.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars as the problems is has can be overcome and they don't really detract from the performance. I'd buy it again if I had too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Matches great with the HD 70, November 9, 2007
This review is from: Optoma DS-GWII9092P 92-Inch Manual Pull Down Projector Screen (Electronics)
After reading up reviews on avs forum, I had to try out this screen. It makes the image sharper and more defined. Definitely an improvement from offwhite wall screen. Though this screen is gray because of the glass bead it reflects and has significant gains.

4.0 out of 5 stars I love my home theater, June 15, 2007

My wife and I decided to by the Optoma DV10 Movietime Theater as a less expensive alternative to a Plasma screen TV. It was also recommended to us by a friend who loves his as well. We have 3 Kids. For a family of 5 to go to see a new release at the theater it costs about $60 with drinks & popcorn. At the time we bought our DV10, Optoma was running a special, $100 rebate, Free Sub-woofer (awesome!) and a free 90" Grey Wolf II screen, all for $800 bucks. You can't beat that with a stick! When you do the math, this thing will pay for it self after just 14 movies. Rent, buy, or barrow from friend, (or the local library thanks to old Ben Franklin). In any case this home theater is great! My whole family loves it. There are a few things to be aware of though. First, you really need a "DARK" room to take full advantage of what this thing can do. We chose this projection medium over plasma because it gives you a MUCH! larger picture for the money, but like any theater, darker is better, unlike Plasmas. Because the mail in rebate, Sub-woofer, & Screen where sent by mail we used the Optoma DV10 by it self for the first 2 months with great results. It sounds pretty good stand alone and the picture quality on my wall was great too. I painted the flat wall surface with Sherwin Williams Promar 200 (Satin finish) (Color: Vellum). I must say I was a little disappointed when I got the Grey Wolf II screen. I thought I would see a huge difference in picture quality and I did not. I disagree with other reviews that there is too much gain. Maybe too much contrast, but the screen seemed much darker than just my plane wall. What was also an annoyance was that the screen intensity seemed to change as you stand up from your seat (Much like the picture fade from right to left on the old back projection TV's). We noticed it while getting up to go to the bathroom during a movie. The difference between standing and sitting on the floor is very noticeable, where my wall did not have this problem? I'm not sure why this screen does this but I can't say I'm crazy about that particular characteristic. Another problem we had with the screen is that it does not retract very well. It should retract just like window blinds but it takes us up to 10 try's every time we try to roll it up. Very very annoying! All in all, the screen is still OK and the whole system works great. At home you never have to worry about some ignorant big guloot parking himself right in front of your kids so they can't see during a family movie at a theater you paid $8.00 a head for. I love this thing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great investment!!!, January 9, 2007
This review is from: Optoma DS-GWII9092P 92-Inch Manual Pull Down Projector Screen (Electronics)
Okay, I might be a bit too excited about the investment part, yet nonetheless this screen was a great price/quality ratio.

I highly recommend acquisition of a screen as projection on a wall will result in a rather poor picture quality. This particular screen has a gain of 1.8, which means that the contrast is rather high, which again enhances the viewing experience.

I got this screen for 129$ + free shipping in February of 2006. I consider that to be a pretty good price. I got another one for a friend of mine for 179$. There were two models advertised at the time - one for 179$ and the other one that was 299$. Went to Optoma's website and was unable to find any differences between the two...

So, long story short - it's an 'a must' thing to have for your home theater. Watch for the price! And of course, enjoy your home theater.

2.0 out of 5 stars curtain effect and some gain variance, January 7, 2012
This review is from: Optoma DS-GWII9092P 92-Inch Manual Pull Down Projector Screen (Electronics)
I started out with an Optoma DV10 that sat on a center table and projected to the screen at an angle very close to the viewer's eye level. This works well for the grey hawk / optoma 92. I've since upgraded to a 1080P Epson projector hung from the ceiling and I now have some issues with this screen.

I've become convinced that the gain of 1.8 is only directly opposing the light source and falls off significantly when light source and viewing angle are different. I think you can tell this effect by standing in front of this screen with some room lights behind you. Where ever you move your head you get a bright halo effect ONLY around your head from the lights behind you but the light reflection fades off significantly beyond that "halo." The result from my ceiling mounted (much higher quality and output) Epson projector is a noticeably dimmer picture.

Also the "curtain effect" at the bottom of the screen was not noticeable when the Optoma (and initially the Epson) was on the table. Once the ceiling became the source of the projection, the curtain effect became unwatchably obvious. Tickers at the screen bottom almost make you sea sick. Panning down the court of a sporting event makes the center logos sway up and down very annoyingly.

This is probably true of other hanging screens but I'm willing to abandon this one and try something else. I plan to go with a broader light reflection surface this time. I don't think the 1.8 gain is very useful as implemented. I will probably try to build my own screen with tensioners rigged onto the screen material to keep it flat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy with the purchase, November 9, 2011

This review is from: Optoma DS-GWII9092P 92-Inch Manual Pull Down Projector Screen (Electronics)
I am happy with my purchase. Initially, I was worried when the package came as it had a different name on the box, apparently it was a spanish name for the same product. I was initially going to go with an electric pulldown, but because of the additional power line I would have to construct, I decided against it. I have it installed in my basement ceiling which is about 8' and I have no issues with simply using the manual option. The instructions were pretty straightforward. I had to buy 2 S hooks to install it on my ceiling. You definitely need 2 people to install as it will help with alignment and balance when you are trying to hook it up. The screen itself is good and there is no glare. The colors come up very vivid, I have an Optoma HD 1080p projector and the combination works very well.

I have this screen in my living room with multi-pane doors to the side; I only have problems with light when the sun shines through the glass directly onto the screen. When I get curtains for the doors, the problem will be solved.
