We bought this projector to show movies and play video games outside at night. We live on a corner lot and our back deck faces the side of our neighbors house - which has cream siding and no windows - PERFECT. I was looking for a sub-$500 (budget) projector that would be "adaquet", since the fun is in the experience and not necessarily the on-screen detail.

In doing research, I saw that to watch a movie using this projector (and anything else in this price range), the distance should be around 25 feet from the "screen" (based on the projector estimator app) for a good picture and where I was planning on putting it - on a table on the deck- the distance is 35 feet. I was a bit concerned that it might be too far and would be a faint image.

The box arrived yesterday and when I got home from work, I decided to bite the bullet and see how it worked. It had rained, so I chose to test it from inside the house (through an open sliding glass door) and see how it looked, even though this was back another 18 feet from where I planned on using it. With great trepidation, I plugged it in and turned it on..... WOW. I was amazed at how BIG, BRIGHT, and CLEAR the image was. Any concerns I had about being able to see the image were gone. The whole family was amazed and is really pumped and excited to see how movies play on this beast. It has a case, lens cover, and remote (with batteries) - but the 3 features that stood out to me were: 1. 3K Lumens; 2. HDMI input; and 3. Audio Out (need it for HDMI sources).

I'll update this review after movie night this Friday with some more specifics on the picture quality and sound, but as of now...I'm extremely happy with the purchase.

The Backstory

Absolutely the best projector for $500 or less. I have owned an Epson Powerlite 77C for 6 years. When I bought it, it was $649 and it was the best you could get for a fantastic all around projector. When HD was getting more popular and HDMI was popping up everywhere, my projector started to look old. I had to make so many conversions as far as converting from composite video, to s-video, to RGB-VGA so by the time I was able to make the Epson produce 1080i, I had literally 60 feet of cable wrapped up behind my entertainment rack to handle all the devices (Blue Ray, Wii, Cable Box and Xbox. Is was absolutely nuts. In the 6 years using it, I also replaced the lamp 3 times at $150 a pop. By the 3rd lamp, I was in over $1000! I have been looking to upgrade for sometime, and it has been quite an aggravating ordeal. When buying a typical TV, its easy. You got to the stores, look at the pictures, see the sizes, etc. Shopping for a projector, yeah, not easy. No every place you live near has retailers who sell them. If you find them, there are only high end units that are big and cost a fortune. I hate to buy things that I cant see for myself.

The Research

Going around to stores that sold what few they carried, most of them only had 1 on display that was turned on and showing something which is frustrating beyond words. After going around (HH Greg, Frys, Best Buy, Brands Mart, Staples, Office Max) I gave up and came here. Best decision ever.

The Upgrade

After looking at 75 different units in the $250 to $700 range, the Pro260X slaps me in the face. First of all, other people who bought them gave great reviews. The features this baby has are phenomenal. 3000 lumens is true to the advertisement.

This is my first projector and I highly recommend it. I bought it to do PowerPoint presentations in training sessions for small groups of ten to twenty. The projector is easy to set up with my Toshiba Tecra laptop (I'd never done this before but it was easy to figure out). The only complaint I would have is that the cord is a bit short; many of the rooms in which I used this had a conference room table in the center and an extension cord was needed for the closest socket more than six feet away. Not a big deal, but a minor inconvenience.

The projector does run hot even after a 30 minute presentation, but I could pick it up soon after turning it off and pack it with no concerns. The image is bright enough in a small room even with some lights on (but not right over the screen, of course). The remote was pretty much useless for PowerPoint; I could not get it to advance slides, so I had to use the laptop. Maybe there's a way, but I couldn't find it. Also, there is no focus on the remote, but once you get the initial focus set, you really shouldn't need to change it for the same presentation, unless you have to move your projector. In fact, I don't use the remote for anything now so I don't bring it with me. The carrying bag is sturdy and the projector fits in tightly, which keeps it stable during transport.

I considered other projectors, especially those where the image can be straightened when you have to project at an angle (I don't know the technical term for this). I wish this had that feature for top/bottom and side corrections, especially with that short cord when we could not find an extension or projector table. Still, I'm happy with this purchase and it meets my needs once it is all set up.
