As a dental hygienist I have reviewed the many options available in the lucrative area of "teeth whitening."

I have attended top-ranked seminars and read many peer-reviewed journal articles on this subject. Not to mention I have tried many different products myself.

The research shows that the concentration/percentage of the chemical present in bleaching is really NOT important to the degree of efficacy in the product. In other words a 16% product is really no better than a 10% product according to the research. And products that use a REALLY high concentrate have not been researched as fully for harmful effects. These are present in some in-office and over-the counter-products. Products that utilize a laser or "blue-light" can cause a large amount of dessication (drying) of the tooth enamel. Because of this drying, the enamel LOOKS whiter for the first couple of days, until the teeth are rehydrated fully by the saliva and moisture. ANY bleaching product can burn the soft tissue, but in-office-laser products are the easiest to get serious burns with. They use a very high concentrate of the chemical which will burn the tissue immediately should it accidently come into contact with the gums. Yet the overall "whitening" factor doesn't seem to be improved by these high concentrate methods. Plus the cost for this service when done in-office is enormous. Yet the OVERALL results appear no better than OTC products when directions are followed properly.

I have tried these Rembrandt strips (no - I don't work for them) and they are my personal favorite for using. They WORK! They are easier to apply to the teeth than other over-the-counter products, you only apply them ONCE a day, rather than twice, they cover back further and reach along the gumline area of the teeth better (often the darkest area of the teeth), the gel seems to become thicker as it warms up and gets into the "nooks and crannies" better, and they STAY PUT! Yes they are bulkier than the Crest strips, and they don't look as good in public, so wear them before you go to bed or at another convenient time when you are home. Wipe the excess gel that spills over the top away from the gums as you wear them. If you are one of the MANY that suffer from tooth-sensitivity after application, use a sport-moutguard and apply a thin strip of DESENSITIZING toothpaste (any brand) and wear this for 10 minutes BEFORE application of the "whitener." It is also beneficial to "skip days" between wearing strips to control sensitivity. Whitening still occurs, it just takes a little longer.

I have seen patients who participate in the in-office laser-type bleaching have extreme sensitivity after the procedure and must often wait for days for the pain to subside. Some offices offer high concentrate fluoride treatments in an attempt to curb this sensitivity. The de-sensitizing toothpaste is not a bad idea to use before and after this procedure too. Just use COLOR-FREE toothpastes as explained below. My office has offered all employees the laser-bleaching, which I chose not to do. I have a tendency towards sensitivity with ANY bleaching products, so I know where this will lead and would rather avoid it!!

Also, with laser-bleaching" the teeth are very "stain-prone" the first few days or so after the procedure, due to the extreme dessication that occurs from the procedure. This makes avoidance of color-rich foods, drinks and toothpastes imperative for a few days following the bleaching, unless you want ketchup-red, blueberry-blue or mustard-yellow teeth.

Before doing any procedure it is best to do your own research before you make any choice. Good luck with these strips if you choose to use them. I really like them and the price is right!
