Don't Bother,
By
This review is from: Oracle 9iAS Portal Bible (Paperback)
I am implementing Oracle IAS 1.0.2.2 with Oracle Portal 3.0.9, which is pretty much the latest version of it to date (08/30/01).I'm sure this book was fine for an older version, but there have been enough changes to make this pretty useless. The product is just moving too fast. I can't even imagine the other title supposedly coming out in September will be able to keep up, because there are still issues with security settings in Portal Export/Import that need to be addressed as well as Reports Server integration.

Great place to get started on Portal,
By Jason Pepper (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Oracle 9iAS Portal Bible (Paperback)
I think the other review of this book is wholly unfair. I have been a user of WebDB and now Oracle Portal since the first releases. The assertion that this book is out of date is a little unfair, it would be impossible, given the time it takes to write a book when compared to the speed of software development to have kept up with all the features as currently delivered in Oracle Portal. However, if you are new to Oracle Portal you could do worse than get this book to introduce you to the Portal concepts, explain the architecture and intended usage model for the product and help you get your first portal site up and running. I have other books written by the authors and I think they write in a clear, concise and easily read manner, for the newbie in the Portal market this book is a great place to get started.

A good starting point but....,
By Tim Daniell (Sherwood, Queensland Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Oracle 9iAS Portal Bible (Paperback)
I found the book a good introduction to Oracle Portal and worth a read. However, the book has a number of bugs, inconsistencies between the text and the CD and missing information in the install section in chapter 2. It's also quite out-of-date now (as at 15-Apr-02). Also, the website for the book also does not contain the bug fixes, a big disappointment. Worth reading but be prepared for some frustration... When the examples do not work, try skipping them and you may find the answer later in the book.

Good Overview,
By David Roberts (La Mesa, CA United States) - See all my reviews

The text is a good initial coverage of the Portal product. With the new text from Oracle Press (Sept 20 printing) a developer should have all the tools he or she needs for a Portal project. We are close to a finished application in just a few weeks...

Great Help!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Oracle 9iAS Portal Bible (Paperback)
This was an excellent help in guiding me through the technical use of the Portal. This book is simple in format and easy to use and flows very logically. Normally portal books are very difficualt to follow and focus on one specific area, this book however is writtent with end user in mind for a wide variety of applications.Through the use of this book I was able to use the portal tool very effectively within hours. Under normal circumstances it would have taken days of training and significnat expenses to get to the same end result. Well done guys!!!

Advanced Techniques covered too short,
By A Customer
This review is from: Oracle 9iAS Portal Bible (Paperback)
If you build an portal, then you will have to integrate several 'j2ee'-applications. In the 'Bible' you'll find minimal help on 7 pages (out of 955!) to integrate JSPs and Servlets as portlet. The examples presented are partially buggy (e.g. p839 step 13. or p858 step 11. does not mention debuglevel, but step 13 shows the test page).

Great book for 1st time 9i AS Portal User,
By Syed W. Mehdi (Westland, MI USA) - See all my reviews

This book provided a very simple approach to understanding 9i AS architect. Oracle official documentation/install guide is very confusing, caused me several sleepless night figuring out 9i AS Portal issues. This book provided the simple and easy approach with the live example as you move along the chapters. I bought four other books from Oracle Press on the same subject matter and I rate them at 1.5 star. This is a must book for the first timer or a good reference for later use.Syed

Book is written in a clear and easy read way. As someone new to the Portal world, but familiar with Oracle application development tools, this book is a great place to begin your self training.

Well written book,
By Jim Pratt (Lincoln, Ne USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Oracle 9iAS Portal Bible (Paperback)
I found this to be a well written overview of the capabilities of the portal product. It helped clarify the various elements of Portal applications. I believe it would be of particular use to developers that do not have extensive web based programming experience, as it takes the time to explain supporting technologies (e.g. JavaScript) . Very enjoyable reading, with current and useful information. I recommend it.
