As a developer at Oracle Corporation working by day (and night!) on the ADF framework, I didn't have the bandwidth to review Sten's chapters as the book progressed but I was happy to get my copy of the finished product to read on some recent time off. Sten has created a highly-readable book, with great examples and insightful analogies, which feels like a one-to-one knowledge transfer session from an expert consultant with lots of field experience. Using a learn-by-doing style, Sten takes architects, development leads, and developers step by step through the planning, staffing, organizing, implementing, building, deploying, testing, tuning, customizing, and UI "skinning" of a well-architected, modularized Oracle ADF web application. The book includes important details not found in any other ADF book I'm aware of related to maximizing team productivity using the team collaboration features built right into the JDeveloper IDE. While other ADF books focus more on the Oracle ADF framework features, this book dovetails perfectly with them by focusing on the real-world aspects that a team-based development effort will require, including source control, issue tracking, both unit- and UI testing, and repeatable build automation. This priceless advice, presented all in one place and in a meaningful order that can be read cover-to-cover or as a reference, is definitely a must-have Oracle ADF book to add to your collection.

I bought this book expecting that it would explain ADF concepts in detail (like where controls are initializes for ADF Contro, which method and class should be overridden to add a control at run time etc) After going through this book, it has only 1 chapter about ADF and rest is about Organizing the Team and Prepare the Build etc..This book is not for you if you want to learn ADF components.

Although it is easy to argue whether the development in ADF is a simple task, what distinguishes this book from others, is not the coverage of technology but the detailed description of skills, tools and project tasks that a real world application requires. From that perspective, it is extremely valuable to architects, project managers and technical leaders that are crafting their way towards ADF, especially for first time. More specifically, the book has the following chapters:

1. The ADF Proof of Concept, which describes the case study and a general description of the various involving components (entities, lovs, task flows, etc.)
2. Estimating The Effort, a very interesting chapter on the estimation of complexity of the use case and how is this related to ADF technology
3. Getting Organized, talks about the roles, skills and staffing necessary for an ADF project. It also provides with an indicative list of software tools that will be needed during the development and testing cycles, naming conventions, hints about organization structure projects and workspaces. This is the most complete and important part of the book.
4. Productive Teamwork, which outlines the Subversion and Oracle Team Productivity Center for integration with issue tracking systems (eg JIRA)
5. Prepare to Build, which involves the construction of templates for task flows and pages and the framework extension classes, before starting the mass production process.
6. The Building Enterprise Application, which attempts to give a sense of an end-to-end development experience in ADF
7. Testing your Application, discusses the usage the use of JUnit, Selenium and JMeter in an ADF application.
8. Look and Feel, talks about skins and CSS.
