Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

The Oracle Certified Professional DBA Certification Exam Guide was written by an Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) for those aspiring to that coveted label. Jason S. Couchman has written a definitive guide to the Oracle certification process that cuts through esoteric database theory and presents the critical information for Oracle mastery in a clear and direct manner.

The book is organized into five units, each corresponding to the four basic OCP examinations and the Oracle8 upgrade examination. Within each unit, there are several chapters that build your knowledge quickly and efficiently. Chapter summaries, chapter questions, and a wonderful "Two-Minute Drill" of key concepts of each chapter give this title real studying value.

The book begins by discussing Oracle's structured query language (SQL) syntax and creating and managing Oracle databases. After this key discussion, the author presents the "big picture" of Oracle architecture and administration. This is followed by an exhaustive discussion of backup and recovery techniques and strategies. The fourth unit focuses on the essential topic of performance tuning, with logically divided chapters on memory, disk, and other performance subsystems. The book wraps up with a unit of preparation for the Oracle8 upgrade examination. This final unit takes you through state-of-the-art features, such as partitioning, object relational design, parallel data manipulation language (DML), security issues, and more.

Whether you're endeavoring to become an OCP or simply looking for a definitive reference guide to Oracle, this hefty tome is worth its weight in critical knowledge. --Steven Plain

2.0 out of 5 stars Painful, September 18, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Oracle Certified Professional Dba Certification Exam Guide (Hardcover)
If a study guide is to be effective, it should combine written material and hands-on exercises - unfortunately, the author of this book chose to use examples which are not easily replicated on the database server. That is, where he could have used tables and examples from the default schema / databases usually included in an Oracle installation, he chose to use his own structures. An annoyance, when you're trying to grasp the concepts and you have to stop to create objects just to test the code. Relatively light treatment of the exam subjects and not a book you'd want to keep as a reference post-certification. Use the excellent Oracle8:The Complete Reference or the Exam Cram series instead of this....

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly written, inaccurate, waste of time, November 21, 2000
This review is from: Oracle Certified Professional Dba Certification Exam Guide (Hardcover)
I read many reviews warning not to buy this book, but I needed something and wanted to give it a chance. DON'T make the same mistake I made. I've read most of the first section laboriously, constantly re-reading paragraphs trying to understand what was written. I finally gave up and turned to another book, by Steve Fernstein (I think) on New Features of Oracle 8i by Published by O'Reilly. WHAT A DIFFERENCE to read something well written and well edited!

4.0 out of 5 stars It's not THAT bad, December 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Oracle Certified Professional Dba Certification Exam Guide (Hardcover)
I don't know why this book is receiving such poor reviews. It's not as bad as people are saying. I passed all four exams over a period of four months using this book. If you read this book *thoroughly* and memorize the key points, that's all you really need to pass the tests. But, I'll admit, I put in a lot of effort to learn and memorize the material. Now that I've taken the tests, I actually have retained quite a bit of information from this book and use it as a reference on occasion. So maybe this isn't the best book in the world, but it does what it's supposed to do - help you pass the tests. Perhaps some people are expecting an "easy" way to pass the tests. It simply does not exist.
