1.0 out of 5 stars Oracle DBA Architect
This book lacks a great deal of detail information given the cost of the book. This does not talk about how to create an Oracle Active Standby Database manually. It sticks to using other tools like RMAN. Not every environment uses Oracle RMAN. This book is way over priced! I should gone to the book store to review the whole book before puchasing it.

The authors do a good job of explaining Data Guard features and architectural components and the decisions that you need to make to be successful with Data Guard. The book is full of tips and recommendations that can only come from experience with using Data Guard in a wide variety of configurations and environments. Where applicable, the authors explain the Data Guard differences between 11g, 10g, and 9i. The book also has several working examples and scripts of how RMAN is used to help create database used in Data Guard environments. This book will raise your knowledge of Data Guard to an expert level.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best on the subject, December 21, 2009
This review is from: Oracle Data Guard 11g Handbook (Oracle Press) (Paperback)
This is by far one of the best Oracle books I have read along with Expert one on One and a couple of titles from K Gopalakrishnan (Wait events and RAC). It has very indepth details of concepts and day to day setup and maintainence of a Data Guard. A very engrossing read (which is rare for a technical book). It can be used by anyone from novice to a professional dba. Awesome book.

5.0 out of 5 stars goes beyond the white papers, July 29, 2009

This review is from: Oracle Data Guard 11g Handbook (Oracle Press) (Paperback)
If you have been deploying High Availability and Disaster Recovery solutions then you probably agree that the MAA docs and white papers are among the best material published on the Oracle OTN website.
This book actually manages to go deeper and beyond the docs, white papers and all conference presentations you may have attended on Oracle Data Guard.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good book on the subject, however, is not a reference book, November 2, 2010

I find the book is well written, interesting to read, it contains many useful advices and examples. However, it is neither a replacement for the official documentaion nor it is a comprehensive reference, my guess it was not meant to be. I found it not really useful in most of situations when I quickly needed answers for real life DataGuard management tasks, the reason being the information provided in the book - commands etc. - firstly, quite limited to the scope of examples, secondly, scattered across the book. Nevertheless, I think it is the best book on the subject at the moment, and it definitely worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, November 19, 2011
This review is from: Oracle Data Guard 11g Handbook (Oracle Press) (Paperback)
This is a very well written book and helped me a lot in understanding and implementing Data Guard / Broker / Fast Failover. Given the authors that is hardly a surprise.

The book also covers data guard with RAC. However the book was written for 11gR1. So some of the RAC complexities of 11gR2's clusterware is obviously missing. (e.g. to use a different network interface for broker/log shipping in a rac-rac configuration)

Also at least in 11gR2 (the version I tested was 11.2.0.3) the comments about the database start options (pages 189-190) does not take into account Active Data Guard's licensing. Unless someone has Active Data Guard license - the physical standby database should be configured with srvctl .. -s mount. Please see metalink/MOS note 1271003.1.

The book is very easy to read and gradually introduces the reader to the complexities of the product.
While it is fairly deep in explaining the concepts, it has also the necessary setups and scripts to help one implement the solution.

I hope the authors keep publishing updated versions of the book with major Oracle releases.

4.0 out of 5 stars Must Have dataguard book, March 29, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Oracle Data Guard 11g Handbook (Oracle Press) (Paperback)
This book is written in simple and easy to understand language. At the same time provides detail explanation of dataguard. I have read this book, before setting up dataguard for my company and replacing SRDF with dataguard. Every DBA must read this book, before setting dataGuard or managing it.

Thank you Larry!

Larry has provided a complete A-Z of Data Guard and endless examples. This book is very well written and if you can't setup Data Guard after reading it, you just are not trying. In addition Larry backs up his written word on OTN with endless hours of free Data Guard help and advice. The man is a saint. Buy this Book.

Might be the best Oracle book I have ever read. Clear, detailed examples for setup, RMAN with Data Guard,
Parameters, Net80. Very well done. Have read cover to cover and was unable to an error or even a typo.
Great sections on switchover, failover and Data Broker. I now have ten standby systems and I sleep better at night. Larry is a gifted technical writer. Buy this book!!
