Well I am Happy,
By Mary West "Mary" (Europe) - See all my reviews

Well I found this book extremely useful. Okay so you could wade thru the doc, but this book has everthing in one place with some easy to follow examples. It also encouraged me to take a look at using EM rather than typing everything in on the command line.

Very good overall coverage,

This book is very useful if you want to get overall coverage of data warehousing related features in Oracle 10g. The book does not covers any topic in details but does covers all areas (SQL, Utilities, OWB, Discoverer, ODM) related to the DW/BI space.

Good overview, but frustated by errors and lack of source,

I'm new to both Oracle and Data Warehousing and I haven't found many Data Warehousing texts specific to Oracle. I was hoping this would not only be a source for an architecture and design overview, but I also hoped to setup and work through the examples I saw in text as I perused it in the book store. I mean, no one would publish a modern computer book without providing downloadable source, would they? Maybe I missed something, but there is no CD, no reference in the text, and I checked the publishers web site. Found nothing! Especially for a topic like Data Warehousing, where learning to manage large amounts of data is the point of the whole subject, I found it amazing that no sample data is provided.
Along this same line, the Appendix that shows the schema setup for the example database has errors in the script code, plus the steps are out of order. Apparently the authors expect you to use the Enterprise Manager to setup your database. The setup scripts appear to be an afterthought, and do not appear to be edited. If the authors had provided downloadable scripts and data, perhaps they would have been forced to work through this setup themselves and would have avoid this problem. I'm building sample data, and reading through the text, but for $60.00 I expected more.

Good book if you want to know what is Data Warehouse,

I joined this company to work for the Data Warehouse group. I have worked with Oracle Databases for about 12 Years but I'm new to data warehouse. I was finding myself out of the place for various data warehouse concepts. I tried reading Oracle Documentation. Although it was helpful but I wanted to have something that could give me good information about basic data warehousing concepts.
Therefore I skimmed through various books at a book store most of the books talk about the advanced stuff assuming that you're familiar with basic concepts of Data Warehousing. Finally I looked at this book and was happy with the simplicity of presentation of the various data warehousing concepts. Therefore I ordered it through Amazon. So far I have liked this book it tells you the very basics of the Oracle Data Warehousing. It does not have many real life or project examples but it does cover the basic concepts that comes handy when you're trying to build or maintain a data warehouse. I do not recommend this book as only source of information for Data Warehousing but for the beginners like me who want to lay a foundation for their knowledge before getting into more serious stuff this is a good start. I would recommend reading this book to gain an understanding of the concepts and use Oracle documentation for your projects.

Nice presentation but...,

Nice presentation of the Oracle products and features in the area of data warehousing but TOTAL lack of real world examples.
For someone which is new in this area it may be interesting to discover all the new features provided by Oracle. But to someone having already some years of experience I wouldn't recommand this book.

Why Data warehousing ?
While data warehouses have been around for a while, the recent financial crises has compelled the financial institutions to do a better job of accountability (i.e. storing, measuring, and reporting of their business). Why Oracle ? Largest market share of database technology in the corporate world Why this book ? In the absence of this text, if a novice were to build a data warehouse from scratch, they will have to learn data modeling, database design, database administration, ETL, and BI. These subjects are a universe in themselves and will warrant considerable effort in terms of time and resources What I liked about this book (in the order of importance)? ·"doing-by-learning" approach to data warehousing ·the book flows smoothly from conception, design, implementation, administration, and maintenance phases ·where applicable, all the design alternatives are discussed, and best practises are recommended ·a good balance of implementation details either via the OEM (i.e. GUI) or programming (mostly PL/SQL) ·minimal coverage of Oracle Warehouse Builder (Oracle's ETL tool) and Discoverer (Oracle's BI tool). Yes, minimal coverage makes the user aware of the existence of these tools. Anything beyond this is a waste of time, considering neither OWB nor Oracle Discoverer has gained any substantial foot hold in the ETL or BI markets ·excellent use of graphics and screen shoots on a high quality paper Conclusions A great spring board for anybody who wants to experience an "end-to-end" data warehouse implementation What next ? IBM Cognos (for aspiring BI developers) Informatica or DataStage (for aspiring ETL developers) Ralph Kimball's Data Warehouse Toolkit (for data modelers / architects)

Practical. Stuffed with example situations and code and pointers. *** I might have added a chapter on Oracle Text. Management systems rely on text pools, related to processes and external interfaces. Its not all numbers, these days. *** Otherwise, this gets an A. *** I've used this book again and again. $$$$$ on the table consulting.
