4.0 out of 5 stars Good for beginner and intermediate users
This book is good for beginner and intermediate users. When I bought the book last year, I was intermediate SQL and beginner Oracle. On my previous database projects, I used SQL Server and Sybase and used GUIs to create my tables and relationships. My current project requires PL/SQL scripts that can be run in batch. Since I had done a lot of DML (Data Manipulation Language, e.g., SELECT), little DDL (Data Definition Language, e.g., CREATE TABLE), and virtually no Oracle, I needed help! This book rescued me.

This is now my main reference for SQL, and especially Oracle-specific SQL. It has many examples of SQL for specific basic tasks. Not system administration tasks, mind you, but DML and DDL. These examples are the biggest strength. Oracle's syntax flowcharts and O'Reilly's "SQL In A Nutshell" are fine, but I need examples. "Show me".

One last note: the book is a SQL book, not a PL/SQL book. If you need to do PL/SQL you will need another PL/SQL-specific book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book on SQL and PL/SQL, October 8, 2008
I'm an experienced Oracle developer and I use this book all the time. I have several books on SQL, and this book is by far the best. It has good examples. I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid SQL knowledge, February 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a great book to learn SQL. I used it to help study to the Oracle 10g SQL Expert certification test. Since it goes deeper in many subjects than the oficial Oracle University books, it was certainly a great aid to help pass the exam.

If you wish to gain a solid SQL knowledge starting from zero, this book is all you need.

This is a very good review of Oracle SQL. A lof of examples and some background info. It is a thorough coerage of the topics.

My only complaint is that it does not have a CD with the code and book text.

So far the concepts are introduced and the example that follows make sense.

I think it is a well written book. I have not had an opportunity to try the

examples, so I don't know if there are any mistakes.

It has been pretty helpful so far. I've been using it to help me when writing PL/SQL stored procedures on an 11g database.

Well I dont have much to say on this product since I was majoring in business applications programming but I have decided to change majors due to me not being able to understand none of this stuff.I thought this was going to be easy but its not for me.Everything the teacher at my school was teaching seemed pretty hard to understand and remember since its all about codes and abbreviating things and giving commands to pull things out of a specifc location of a chart or table.Idk how all this stuff works.Anyways the book arrived in good condition,no scratches,or bends, brand new.Well thats all I have to say since I didnt really use it,I will now be selling it since I dont need it anymore.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor adaption for the Kindle, August 10, 2008

This review is from: Oracle Database 11g SQL (Osborne ORACLE Press Series) (Kindle Edition)
I purchased this book for my Kindle and it is a well written, informative text on the Oracle database. The problem is that virtually all the tables and figures are completely unreadable on the Kindle. Either the people responsible for converting this eBook never looked at the result on the Kindle or, worse, they did and released it anyway. This will be my last eBook purchase from this publisher.
