4.0 out of 5 stars good information, April 8, 2005
This review is from: Oracle Dataguard: Standby Database Failover Handbook (Oracle In-Focus series) (Paperback)
Few months ago we decided to implement Data Guard for three of our databases and the only help available at that time was 1000+ pages of Oracle Manual. Book by Mathew Hart doesn't go beneath the skin of this important topic. Later last month, this book on data guard was bought for our department and initially I was hesitant to spend time reading it (usually I read only O'REILLY books). But low and behold, final verdict is : its a good informative book.

1. Covers all areas of Oracle Data Gurad.

2. Written simply - No imaginative stories.

3. Best suitable for usual data guard jobs -- setting up, managing , switchover etc.

However, it could have been better. In my opinion it lacks

1. Coverage of Data Guard interaction with OEM.

2. Running data guard in RAC (though its not much different than single instance).

Worth the money (even though it wasn't mine ! ).

This book talks about a lot of functionalities of Data Guard.

I recommend this if you want to learn install, manager and tuning your Data Guard enviroment.

Best Regards,

Paulo Portugal.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worthless-The oracle documents are as good, December 11, 2006
This review is from: Oracle Dataguard: Standby Database Failover Handbook (Oracle In-Focus series) (Paperback)
I thought that this book would be better than the online oracle documentation. It isn't. In fact it is pretty much a regurgitation of the stuff in the mostly worthless Oracle Dataguard Concepts and Administration document. I needed much more info regarding how to set up the standby host including how to initially configure oracle (ie. should you create a DB when you install or not?) Even after buying this book I found myself Googling to get the info I needed.
