Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
Deploying Oracle applications in any organization is an enormous task, and Oracle Financials Handbook should be considered prerequisite reading for any technical or business process specialist involved in such a project. The applications provide core business processes based on Oracle Corporation's database architecture, and the book discusses some of the most popular applications in the suite.

The book opens with a brief executive summary of Oracle Financials. The authors place financial applications in perspective, explaining where they fit into the overall Oracle Applications strategy and what the benefits are of choosing them for core business processes. This section also presents some of the important organizational choices you must make at the outset of deployment.

In the middle section of the book, the authors discuss the modules: general ledger, receivables, payables, asset management, purchasing, inventory, order entry, and others. The General Ledger module forms the core of the strategy and is discussed in great detail. The book provides plenty of flow diagrams to explain each module. The authors devote an additional chapter to budgeting and allocations, and address different accounting models.

Oracle Financials Handbook closes with technical details on deploying Oracle Financials in an enterprise. The entire computing environment is considered in this discussion, which includes information on customizing and modifying the modules to meet your needs. The final chapters cover project management and training issues that you need to work through. --Stephen Plain --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

2.0 out of 5 stars Needed a case study approach for Ora Fin. A long way to go., November 14, 1999
By A Customer
Oracle Financials implementation is not a trivial task. It is a major cost for any organizations' IT department. This books tries to break the ice on Oracle Finacials compiled information. It is the only book that exists in the field of Oracle Financials. The enormity of this tasks makes it impossible to club all the knowledge one would expect from a handbook. However, it does try to be insightful for ar modules as opposed to explanation of other modules. It is the courage of the authors to delve on such an elusive topic that deserves a special mention. What we need for an implementation is case studies with very particular code specific to that situation. I guess for each module in Oracle finacials one could write a book and that is what is required. Or if we try to slice and dice it from different perspective. Let us assume we try to categorize it from Industry line perspective. One for Energy kind of industry, one for production kind of industry, and so on the classification will become endless what is required is the process identification in a business ( for instance invoicing, billing) and then trying to explain the best practices and implementation for that process. The purpose of this book is introduction to Financials and a brief outlook at each module and project management. I think we need a module-detailed book with processes implementation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth Reading Once, January 2, 2000
I must appreciate the efforts of David and Graham to come out with such a book. Those who are used to read Oracle Apps Help and other documentation may not find some thing appealing. The authors have tried to mix functional concepts and some technical info with practical Do's and Don'ts. So may be they are not able to satisfy both to the fullest. This obviously is not possible in single book (in first edition too). Still I would expect the authors to include more of Tips that are not documented and extend the content to include manufacturing, HR and CRM to meants meant for Oracle Applications. This book is definitely worth reading once for all levels of professionals !

5.0 out of 5 stars Compulsory reading for Oracle Fins clients, September 28, 1999
By A Customer
This book is has just the right mix of Application, Accounting , Business, Organizational and Technical information to make it extremely useful. For new and existing Oracle clients who have been on the training course and are wondering what next, this book and it's great contents definitely point the way to how everything fits together. There are important practical pointers as to what NOT to do and how your data flows will be. Anyone who has worked with the Apps product knows that getting to grips with all the parameters, specific Oracle Terminology and setup issues is half the battle. I have been in several countries across the globe and spoken to numerous users who have read this book who all find it has made the Oracle Fins picture a much more complete one for them. One user commented that this book would be excellent as a university course text book to explain how Accounting Systems work. A job well done by the authors to make the large and complex world of Oracle Fins look so simple in an easy to read and comprehensive book.
