The only book you need on Java and Oracle,
By A Customer
This review is from: Oracle 9i JDBC Programming (Paperback)
I spent quite some time reading through the various books on Java programming and Oracle, and this book really stood out as being the best. It covers everything you need: SQL, PL/SQL, Java, JDBC, and J2EE components (EJB, servlets, and JSP). It even covers how to use JDeveloper. I highly recommend this book.

An enjoyable read,
This review is from: Oracle 9i JDBC Programming (Paperback)
I've been programming with Java and Oracle for about 3 years now, and this book shines the light on things like best practices when using Java and Oracle together. This book is a must have if you are using Java and Oracle: kind of like the Thomas Kyte book "Expert-one-on-one" is now. This book teaches you not only how to do things, but _why_ you want to do things a certain way. Because of that, this book is streets ahead of anything else available on Java and Oracle - even the other Oracle Press Java books. This book even teaches you how to use JDeveloper to create Java programs. If you're a newby or an expert, this book will be useful when using Java and Oracle together.

Great book,

I highly recommend this book. Our company has been developing Java applications with the Oracle database for several years now, and our whole team are now using this book to improve our apps. The chapter on performance tuning alone is worth the price of this book.

Immediately useful,
By A Customer
This review is from: Oracle 9i JDBC Programming (Paperback)
I've been programming Java applications that access Oracle databases for over a year now, and I found this book very useful. I liked the fact that it is useful to both beginners and advanced users like me. I especially liked the section on EJBs.

An excellent work,

Rarely one comes across a book so complete as this one. What I liked the most in the book was COMPLETENESS in its discussion. Must say that the author is very precise and consistent in his approach for all topics throughout the book. Just like Mr. Tom Kyte, (Does he need any introduction?), the author too does not hesitate in sharing his personal preferences on dos and don'ts and also shares his personal preferences on the books for advance readings. Advance Java Programmers might be little disappointed if they evaluate book from Java Programming perspective alone but the book is mainly related to JDBC programming for the Oracle Environment and he has covered much more than that for that matter.I must say that for quite sometime I was looking for a book of exactly this kind, and sure this has found a permanent place in my bookshelf now.A brilliant work by Jason Price, will look for more such books from him in future!

Nicely Done AND a Quick Read!,
By Daniel C. Hayes (Phoenixville, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Oracle 9i JDBC Programming (Paperback)
I wish more books were written like this. Price did a nice job of balancing depth with usability as well as explaining JDBC standard features with Oracle JDBC specific extensions (and their performance characteristics). It was a very quick read yet I didn't feel slighted in any way. I can see referencing this text frequently as I occasionally require to tap into more Oracle specific features from within Java (JDBC) applications.

Great book that covers Java with Oracle and also JDeveloper,
By A Customer
This review is from: Oracle 9i JDBC Programming (Paperback)
I liked this book because it covers Java programming with Oracle, and also covers using Oracle JDeveloper 9i. It also covers enterprise programming, and introduces databases, SQL and PL/SQL. I also liked the author's book on Java programming with Oracle SQLJ by O'Reilly.

Hands down the best book on JDBC,
By A Customer
This review is from: Oracle 9i JDBC Programming (Paperback)
I have other books on JDBC, but this book is by far the best. It not only covers standard JDBC, but it also covers all the Oracle extensions to JDBC. I really liked the coverage of Enterprise JavaBeans, JavaServer Pages and servlets also included.

I thoroughly recommend this book,

I bought this book a couple of weeks ago and found it to be extremely helpful in my job as a programmer developing Java applications. One of the things I really liked was that the book covered all the latest features of the Oracle9i database, as well as covering Oracle8i. The book also covers using the Oracle9i Application Server.Part 1 of the book teaches you the basics of JDBC programming, such as using the standard JDBC API, along with the Oracle extensions to standard JDBC. Part 1 also teaches the basics of databases and SQL. Part 2 covers more advanced programming with JDBC, such as using database objects, large objects, and PL/SQL. I also liked the coverage of advanced transaction control supplied in Part 2. Part 3 goes into how you store Java programs in the Oracle9i database, along with how you develop OC4J J2EE components such as Enterprise JavaBeans, JavaServer Pages and servlets for use with the Oracle9i Application Server. Part 4 shows how to tune Java programs for maximum speed. I thoroughly recommend this book to all Java programmers who write programs that use an Oracle database.

Good Book to get you started in JDBC Programming,

This is a really good book to get you started in JDBC Programming. It does expect you to know a little bit about object oriented programming and Java. If you don't have this basic knowledge, I recommend you get a book that covers Core Java Development to fulfill this need.
This book provides a lot of useful examples for developing SQL queries and PL/SQL data manipulation functionality. It shows you how to write functions, procedures, and packages in PL/SQL, which I found useful. Remember, however, that this covers Oracle 9i. I was programming a jsp web site that was using Oracle 10g and some of the functionality does not work the same in 10g as it does in 9i. But if you can't find a book on 10g, then get this book. In addition, the part that I found very helpful was the writing of Java jsp methods to invoke the calls the PL/SQL Data Manipulation Scripts. In summary, this book will help you with the Oracle and JDBC side of programming and give you good examples. This is not an all inclusive book, however. If you're programming JSPs, then you'll also need a good book on JSP programming. I recommend the Murach Java Servlets and JSP 2nd Edition to fulfill this need. With these 2 books, I was able to do some pretty cool JSP/JDBC development. |
