Product Description
Parallel processing is becoming increasingly important to database computing. As databases grow to enormous sizes and are accessed by large numbers of users, this growth strains the ability of single-processor and single-computer systems to handle the load. More and more, organizations are turning to parallel processing to give them the performance, scalability, and reliability they need. Oracle Parallel Processing is the first book to describe the full range of parallel processing capabilities in the Oracle environment, including those new to Oracle8i. In addition to describing parallel processing benefits and architectures (SMP, MPP, NUMA, and clusters), it covers the use, administration, and tuning of Oracle's many parallel execution features: parallel query, parallel data loading, parallel DML and DDL, and parallel replication propagation. The book also covers requirements, administration, monitoring, tuning, and recovery issues for Oracle Parallel Server (OPS), which allows work to be spread over both multiple CPUs and multiple nodes.

About the Author
Tushar Mahapatra has been a software developer and consultant since 1987 and has worked on a variety of OLTP and DSS projects using the Oracle database. Presently, as a database architect for a Fortune 500 company, he is responsible for the design, implementation, and deployment of applications in an Oracle Parallel Server environment. He also runs a consulting company that provides database design, application development, and database administration services for Oracle databases. Tushar has a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering, a master of technology degree in industrial management, and a master of science degree in computer science and management. He lives in New Jersey with his wife Sasmita and their two children. He can be reached by email at tushar@mitrasystems.com.

Sanjay Mishra is a certified Oracle database administrator with more than ten years of IT experience. He has been involved in the design, architecture, and implementation of many mission-critical and decision support databases. He has worked extensively in the areas of database architecture, database management, backup / recovery, performance tuning, Oracle Parallel Server, and parallel execution. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, and a Master of Engineering degree in Systems Science and Automation. He is the coauthor of Oracle Parallel Processing and Oracle SQL Loader: The Definitive Guide (both published by O'Reilly & Associates). Presently, he works as a database architect at Dallas Based i2 Technologies, and can be reached at sanjay_mishra@i2.com.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rare O-Reilly dissapointment, January 28, 2001
By Michael D Boyer (Lansdale, PA USA) - See all my reviews
Unfortunately, I usually trust that I can pick up an O'Reilly technical book and be confident that it is one of the finest works both for accuracy and completeness of content -- this title is the rare exception.

I have been developing for and managing terabyte plus Oracle databases for a number of years -- this title lacks the practical gotchas and information needed to effectivly manage and develop parallel systems with any degree of complexity.

If you have a large database and need to break simple jobs up then you may find the title has adequate coverage; however, if you are dealing with complex data models, with situations where you have a great deal of object colision (and hence waits and latch contention), then this title will not meet your needs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice rocking chair reading, December 2, 2001
The book describes the Oracle parallel concept and features in an easy understandable way by words, repeating the same information several times on different pages. But even basic admin knowhow (e.g. how to access a parallel server db by Net8), useful SQL-code examples (forget about the bunch of selects shown how to query a V$-view) and clear detailed strategies how to do (e.g. what is a good estimation for the value of the DEGREE parameter) are missing. I easily got through that book in one evening sitting in my rocking chair. And I did not miss my computer with Oracle on it. Make the philosophical text half as long by cutting away what is said twice, and use the pages for the "real stuff", then you will have a usefull book. The 3 stars rating basically reflects its repertoire value.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rehash of information already in Parallel Server Documentati, January 21, 2001
By Kristiaan Kolk (Netherlands) - See all my reviews
I found that this book contain lots of info that is already present in the Oracle Documentation. Actually some of the SQL queries (even with mistakes) are directly copied from the Oracle Parallel Server Doc (7.3+). I don't see any additional information added that is new in this book. Not sure if the authors have seen any large production Parallel Server systems, but there is no usefull real life information in this book. For example how to tune large Oracle Parallel Server Systems. If you want a summary of the oracle doc, then you should buy this.
