Excellent for beginners,
By nullptr "nullptr" (Seattle, Washington) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Oracle Pl/SQL Programming (Oracle Series) (Paperback)
I bought this book as a complete Oracle novice, transitioning from Microsoft T-SQL to PL/SQL. I was worried about the transition being difficult until I read this book.It is one of those very rare books that presents advanced concepts in a context understandable by users of all experience levels. The author often throws in tips about Oracle PL/SQL quirks to watch out for, as well as some very applicable information about how Oracle works internally. I've since become more comfortable with PL/SQL, and the book also serves as a great reference. I highly encourage you to read this book straight through. I recommend this well-written book to anybody wanting to learn PL/SQL, as well as anyone needing a great reference.

An Excellent Book,
By A Customer
This review is from: Oracle Pl/SQL Programming (Oracle Series) (Paperback)
This is definitely an excellent book. No one should rank it less than 5 stars just because it was published in 1996. Please do some research before talk. Actually, Scott Urman has wrote a book, "Oracle8 PL/SQL Programming", which was published in 1997. Buy this one if you want to learn PL/SQL 8.0.

Good but outdated,

Oracle 8 is out and in this book it only covers to Oracle 7. It is a very well written book. It is a valuable reference however it was published in 1996. Still looking for Oracle SQL Plus 8.0 AND the PL/SQL Programming. I hope the author steps up to the plate and updates his work.

This book is excellent. The topics have discussed in detail and are made very easy even for a beginner. The book should come in a hard cover as it is one of those books that you would not like to give as a loaner to anyone.

A must for all the PL/SQL programmers. It has very good examples which are also explained by the addition of comments. The language used is very simple and easy to understand. Covers a lot in Cursors, triggers, procedures and functions. I think this book will help me to achieve my goal:)

This review is from: Oracle Pl/SQL Programming (Oracle Series) (Paperback)
This book should be standard for computer programming language books. I have gone to several times and it has never failed me. It has very clear explanations and examples which almost write out the code for you. I carry it everywhere. It is the sole Oracle PL/SQL programming reference I use.

Well-Organized, Useful Examples, Easy to Read,
By A Customer
This review is from: Oracle Pl/SQL Programming (Oracle Series) (Paperback)
Although the information was accurate and useful, I think the strength of this book was it's clear and logical presentation. It is easy to read and very helpful. For example, I needed to know how to dynamically build the "where" clause for select statements and his chapter on DBMS_SQL gave me the tools to accomplish my task at work.

Excellent Intro to PL/SQL - and Programming...,

This review is from: Oracle Pl/SQL Programming (Oracle Series) (Paperback)
I don't know how to objectively review a book for which I have such a strong emotional attachment, so I won't even try. This book launched my career as a programmer, and while there was a lot of work after it to get where I am today, I credit it as what got me off the ground. It is definitely not an advanced concepts book - but it was 100% perfect as a launching pad, and contains a lot of basic programming concepts that are essential outside PL/SQL.
The prose in the book is clear, simple and importantly, readable. This remains the most accessible technical book I've ever read, and I've read a lot. I keep this book around for sentimental reasons, primarily, as it really is outdated. But it's a hopeful reminder that not all tech books are dry and uninformative. Some of them really do contain stuff that can take you special places, and open doors. Long live SCOTT/TIGER!

An Outstanding Wealth of Information,

This book is a MAINSTAY in my reference library. Though I do only limited back-end development in the applications I work on, this is the first book I look for when I need to be pointed in the right direction. I highly recommend it!
