Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Oracle RMAN Pocket Reference is for DBAs who use Oracle Recovery Manager for database backup and recovery. Many DBAs are just now becoming familiar with Recovery Manager (RMAN), and will welcome a handy pocket reference that guides them through common backup and recovery tasks. The first portion of the book is primarily task-oriented. After a short section on RMAN architecture, the book shows how to perform common tasks such implementing a recovery catalog, backing up a database, and recovering a database. All in checklist style. The second portion of the book consists of a handy syntax reference to the many RMAN commands. Having a quick reference to RMAN commands is a great convenience to DBAs who otherwise, often under the pressure of a recovery situation, would have to wade through Oracle's online documentation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very useful book for the DBA/SYSADMIN user - fits in pocket!, March 7, 2002
By "phanttomracer" (South Easton, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This book by no means replaces the (online) documentation that oracle provides, or a more complete RMAN book.

But it shines when you want the syntax without carrying around a boat anchor of a book.

You need a working knowlege of RMAN for this book to be useful. If you purchase this to learn RMAN, you will be disappointed. If you know, or are learning to use RMAN, it is helpful.

I like it because I can pop it in my back (or shirt) pocket.

Half of the book is dedicated to syntax. The first half is a brief overview of the RMAN world.

It is a 'Must Have' for anyone using RMAN. But you will need other documentation in addition. I have found the Oracle supplied documentation (on CD) very good. But it is not 'portable'.

3.0 out of 5 stars very handy to get the syntax, January 10, 2002
By A Customer
Useful to get the syntax in emergency. But not to get good knowledge on the subject. It is better to refer the technet documentation.
