Book Description

January 2001
SQL is an elegant and powerful tool for querying Oracle databases. Oracle SQL Primer discusses the concepts, techniques, and mindset needed to produce accurate and fast SQL. These skills have never before been collected into a single book.

In Oracle SQL Primer, you'll experience SQL as a craft and learn how to: systematically approach any query and break it into easy, modular steps; ensure accurate SQL queries with good response time; define the query population and avoid common mistakes in definition; step through table joins and identify when errors occur; fix join errors that compromise the integrity of the query population; structure queries to make them easier to interpret, test, and debug; apply templates that will save time in report preparation; format and document reports for distribution to other people; use a set of SQL utility programs to explore any Oracle database; and write SQL that demonstrates true craftsmanship.

Oracle SQL Primer distinguishes itself from other SQL books with its: emphasis on SQL for reporting and ad hoc queries; templates to produce common reports; 200 figures that illustrate key points; exercises and answers to sharpen SQL skills (appropriate for training, classroom, or self-paced use); use of a simulated student registration system to provide reality to examples; extensive SQL and SQL*Plus documentation collected in one place; organization of topics based on what's most important to know to write effective SQL; informal, collegial writing style; and respect and admiration for SQL as a skilled craft.
