5.0 out of 5 stars Informative
My first experience reading Rampant books was with Steve Karam and Robert Freeman's Easy Oracle Jumpstart, some time ago. It was a good start, but I wanted to roll up my sleeves and get down and dirty with Oracle. I bought this book to learn different approaches to solving problems in my own test/development environment. I felt that it really helped out during my...

If you enjoy spending an open ended amount of time trying out as many tricks as possible and seeing what sticks without any understanding of what you are doing or how long the effect will last then this book may be for you.

Alternatively if you charge a lot by the hour and will benefit from as many return visits to a client as possible then this book is...

Alternatively if you charge a lot by the hour and will benefit from as many return visits to a client as possible then this book is probably essential.

1.0 out of 5 stars If only Oracle was a werewolf, September 6, 2007

Who needs to understand the underlying mechanics of the system when you can just keep trying "solutions" until one works? If you like tinkering with production Oracle databases with no fear of consequences, by all means, have at it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Worthless, March 31, 2008
This review is from: Oracle Silver Bullets: Real-World Oracle Performance Secrets (Oracle In-Focus series) (Paperback)
I had high hopes for this volume - but as I get to know this series of books better those hopes are fading across the board. This is just a mess of ideas that could be picked up anywhere and that appear here without enough theory to justify experimenting with them, and some of the theory that is cited is simply wrong.

I bought this book to learn different approaches to solving problems in my own test/development environment. I felt that it really helped out during my learning process. The book provided me with a better overall understanding of Oracle tuning. While not for beginners, this book has valuable information for anyone who wants to learn some new tricks.

I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to get quick tuning results. It was easy to understand and got right to the point. It's nice to learn the methods for tuning without so much theory.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST, No wasted effort, September 24, 2006
This review is from: Oracle Silver Bullets: Real-World Oracle Performance Secrets (Oracle In-Focus series) (Paperback)
All,

I have several hundred Oracle books, and have worked with Oracle for sixteen years. This book is beyond words, it is accurate, and most of all it is concise. Finally someone understands that you do not need to write a book over 800 pages for people to read it.

The real world examples, problem identification and remediation techniques are the best I have ever seen. I will buy Burleson/RAMPANT from now on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cuts to the chase, November 25, 2005
This review is from: Oracle Silver Bullets: Real-World Oracle Performance Secrets (Oracle In-Focus series) (Paperback)
This is a practical book and gives examples on how to tune your database when you can't touch the code. I found it to be well written and easy to understand with illustration on how silver bullets can save the day. I discovered that my optimizer settings were wrong and a fast change made a huge difference in my system. This is a book where a single tip makes it worth double the price.
