4.0 out of 5 stars Clear Understanding of Oracle Streams
This book was a tremendous help to our shop as we deployed Streams to fulfill our replication requirements. Highly recommend it to anyone seeking to learn more about streams.

1.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a waste
The Oracle documentation was easier to read, easier to understand and better organized than this book. This book provided me with nothing I didn't get faster and better from the Oracle doc, including the examples. It was a waste of my time which is much worse than the waste of my money.

2.0 out of 5 stars High Level Overview - not for administrators, March 27, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Oracle Streams: High Speed Replication and Data Sharing (Oracle In-Focus series) (Paperback)
I'm glad this book was only $18 because if I'd paid more than that for it I would have been extremely upset. As it is, I have just reminded myself of why I tend to buy books for work from well know authors and publishers. This book is fine if you want to find out what Oracle Streams does, at a very vague, high level; anyone seeking to find out how to design, configure or implement a real Streams based application is wasting their time. The Oracle documentation is well written, relatively complete, and provides full feature documentation. This book provides nothing useful.

don't bother with this book. Read Oracle documentation before this book. There are mistakes in the scripts and user to run them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not surprised by this book, June 26, 2007
This review is from: Oracle Streams: High Speed Replication and Data Sharing (Oracle In-Focus series) (Paperback)
I bought this book after reading Oracle documentation for couple of days.
Completely disappointed by it.
Only basic coverage which is not enough even to create sample replication.
90% of the materials are just copy/paste (with small rephrase) from Oracle Documentation.

This is a good book. It could have been better if author had included step-by-step instructions and more screen shots. Good for beginners.

4.0 out of 5 stars Need Hard Cover..., January 14, 2009
This review is from: Oracle Streams: High Speed Replication and Data Sharing (Oracle In-Focus series) (Paperback)
If you are new to ORACLE STREAMS, this is the book to read. This book is clearer than the ORACLE Documentation. Everything is explained in detail. This book helped us understand the concept and with the examples we were able to have the STREAMS implemented in no time. We were able to learn all the system tables related to STREAMS.

If you already know STREAMS or you have used STREAMS, this is not the book for you... Maybe you might learn some tricks.

The only thing that bothers me is that the paper cover is not strong enough, the book pages came out of the binding glue the first time I opened the book. I have been very careful with the book but the pages are getting loose.

2.0 out of 5 stars not much out there - including this book, October 2, 2008

This review is from: Oracle Streams: High Speed Replication and Data Sharing (Oracle In-Focus series) (Paperback)
There are not a ton of Oracle Streams books out there. Kind of surprising considering the capabilities of this technology.

That said, this book is one of the few and it is not particularly good. The organization is not thought out. Its like they had a bunch of people write little sections and crammed it all into one book without consolidating. So rather than put all the information in one section - different aspects of a topic are throughout the book. Additionally, with a technical book like this, the INDEX is key. I don't know how many people read tech books cover to cover but I do not. I get the basics, start working, then refer to the index almost exclusively to find what to do next. This book is seriously lacking a good index. I cannot find most of what I am looking for in there.

Generally, this is the same type of (imho) garbage with which Burleson is spamming the discussion groups. I wish his organization would stop generating google hits. I can tell by the material they present that their goal is exposure for themselves, not educating the reader. I guess its always about exposure but good exposure = quality content, not quantity of topics / google hits. I mean, in this last year, I see more google hits from "The Burleson Group" than I do from Tom Kyte (asktom.oracle.com) who is an Oracle super-genius who takes the time to explore topics and even answer questions.

This review is from: Oracle Streams: High Speed Replication and Data Sharing (Oracle In-Focus series) (Paperback)
This is an excellent book on Oracle Streams. It is comprehensive, yet much easier to read than the manual. It distills the essential information one needs to get started with Streams, and can be used for reference later on. The writing is clear, concise and reflective of the author's real-world experience. I administer a Streams system in a very demanding environment, and have found this book very useful.
