4.0 out of 5 stars Great book if you are unfamiliar with Oracle 8i, September 11, 2002

This review is from: Oracle DBA on UNIX and Linux (Paperback)
The problem with selecting a database book is that it is often difficult to determine which one best suits your immediate needs. In my personal experience, making a purchasing experience based upon reading the product description and/or publishers' review is a hit-or-miss attempt.

"Oracle DBA" is the perfect read if you have never used Oracle tools and don't know where to begin. Just as importantly, if you are stuck with installing and maintaining an Oracle database on a Linux system, this book shows you the basics. I haven't read through the entire book yet, but given that I know *nothing* about Oracle and very little about Linux, what I've read so far has already put me in control of my database. How "deep" this book goes into administration I don't know yet, but so far it has provided for my most immediate needs.

This book is not for you if you are just learning fundamental database principles. If you don't know what a database schema is, or if you don't know how to write SQL, for example, you need to read something else. This book probably isn't for you if you are an experienced Oracle DBA and are looking for advanced techniques.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life saver!, February 21, 2002

This review is from: Oracle DBA on UNIX and Linux (Paperback)
It is a great a book! Every new oracle DBA must have this book. How many books available in the market to talk about oracle and unix/linux? Not much. The author of this book is very intellegent to provide precisly the concept of oracle database in few lines compare to other books where the content was too elobrate but not clear. If you are a college graduate and new to oracle/unix environment, I would say that you have to have this book. I wish the author will consider adding more real world DBA challenges and experiences in the future edition. Excellent job!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, May 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Oracle DBA on UNIX and Linux (Paperback)
Oracle DBA on Unix and Linux is easy to read. It has a great flow. I have experience as a DBA, but am a little rusty. This book was just what I needed to bring me back up to speed. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in becomming a DBA, someone who supports a DBA, someone who wants to expand their knowledge of Oracle, or someone moving over to Unix/Linux from Windows. The book does not dive deeply into each topic. It pretty much presents the most important things you need to know. The book does assume a level of knowledge. A first time computer user would be lost. The book does discuss Unix/Linux, but only necessary information. For example, it does not include a chapter on installing Linux! The book also goes beyond the Oracle database, and includes general information on Java, Web DB, and iAS. I have many books on computers, including many O'Reilly books, and this book stands out as one of the more enjoyable reads!
