4.0 out of 5 stars Great book if you are unfamiliar with Oracle 8i
The problem with selecting a database book is that it is often difficult to determine which one best suits your immediate needs. In my personal experience, making a purchasing experience based upon reading the product description and/or publishers' review is a hit-or-miss attempt.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book for beginner/intermediate DBAs
This book is well suited for beginn/intermediate DBAs. It does not go into too much detail concerning UNIX and the interaction with Oracle. It talks a lot about basic stuff (e.g. Oracle architecture, daily activities, backup & recovery etc.), with not much relation to the operating system. Plus it also covers a lot of "off-topic" issues like WebDB, iAS, Java...

The problem with selecting a database book is that it is often difficult to determine which one best suits your immediate needs. In my personal experience, making a purchasing experience based upon reading the product description and/or publishers' review is a hit-or-miss attempt.

"Oracle DBA" is the perfect read if you have never used Oracle tools and don't know where to begin. Just as importantly, if you are stuck with installing and maintaining an Oracle database on a Linux system, this book shows you the basics. I haven't read through the entire book yet, but given that I know *nothing* about Oracle and very little about Linux, what I've read so far has already put me in control of my database. How "deep" this book goes into administration I don't know yet, but so far it has provided for my most immediate needs.

This book is not for you if you are just learning fundamental database principles. If you don't know what a database schema is, or if you don't know how to write SQL, for example, you need to read something else. This book probably isn't for you if you are an experienced Oracle DBA and are looking for advanced techniques.

It is a great a book! Every new oracle DBA must have this book. How many books available in the market to talk about oracle and unix/linux? Not much. The author of this book is very intellegent to provide precisly the concept of oracle database in few lines compare to other books where the content was too elobrate but not clear. If you are a college graduate and new to oracle/unix environment, I would say that you have to have this book. I wish the author will consider adding more real world DBA challenges and experiences in the future edition. Excellent job!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, May 23, 2002

This review is from: Oracle DBA on UNIX and Linux (Paperback)
Oracle DBA on Unix and Linux is easy to read. It has a great flow. I have experience as a DBA, but am a little rusty. This book was just what I needed to bring me back up to speed. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in becomming a DBA, someone who supports a DBA, someone who wants to expand their knowledge of Oracle, or someone moving over to Unix/Linux from Windows. The book does not dive deeply into each topic. It pretty much presents the most important things you need to know. The book does assume a level of knowledge. A first time computer user would be lost. The book does discuss Unix/Linux, but only necessary information. For example, it does not include a chapter on installing Linux! The book also goes beyond the Oracle database, and includes general information on Java, Web DB, and iAS. I have many books on computers, including many O'Reilly books, and this book stands out as one of the more enjoyable reads!

After reading several books on Oracle, this one hits the topic on the nose. Please have a UNIX background but if you don't, it is still an excellent book. All basics are covered here to get you going on more advanced topics in Oracle. I really got a basic understanding of Oracle with this book and would highly recommend this to anyone trying to start out in Oracle. this was written for the common technical person who knows UNIX & computing technologies in general, but you will have a bigger advantage if you are a UNIX Admin.

Great book for anyone starting out as a Oracle DBA, takes the reader through detailed steps of setting up and maintaining an Oracle DBA. This book alone allowed me to setup my own Oracle server on Linux to get my OCP.

I recommend SUSE linux with Oracle.

A must have. Even though I have not finished this book from cover to cover, it has already saved my neck on couple of occasions. Chapter 9, 15 and 16, I have already utilized some of the information. I keep this book handy on my desk as reference. Mike covers all the necessary aspect of Oracle database administration and some.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb book! Especially for beginners to intermediate, August 8, 2005

This is a really good book. I finished the OCP track and after that I needed some knowledge of how Oracle works on Unix and this book did it for me. Everything is explained clearly and at a very basic level. One thing I needed to know was what does a DBA do in his/her daily activities and what is the work environment like for a DBA, who does he/she interact with? This provided the exact answers and much more. But it is really great from day-to-day duties of a DBA, typical scenarios, to backup scripts. Yes, I agree this would be a great book for a Jr. DBA, as I am. Eventhough it is old (8i), you can still benefit from it a lot if you're on 9i.

I would definitely recommend this book. I liked it so much that I would buy 10 more copies :P if I could!!
