There is a section in this book that claims that Oracle stops writing to datafiles while in hot backup mode. Although this is a common misconception, it is nevertheless false.

I am currently studying Oracle. I found this book very helpful. All subjects are easy to find with the well organized index. The explanations are easier to understand and more complete than other Oracle books that I have read. The "tips" are especially usefull. I am recommending it to my friends and classmates.

Each chapter is dense with useful information. If you have to carry one Oracle book around this one has it all. It is concise yet includes anything and everything you might encounter when dealing with oracle databases. It has been an invaluable resource while in school and on the job. It's an incredible deal for under $50. I highly recommend it as an excellent resource guide.

This book tries to say too much in one volume which makes it confusing to novices as well as experienced users of Oracle. I think it should have maintained a consistency in the level of the contents. But there is a lot to learn from this book.

I have never been disappointed in an Unleashed book before.

I thumbed through this, and it seemed okay at a casual glance, so I bought it at the local bookstore. Since it was part of the overall excellent "Unleashed Series" I figured I couldn't go wrong!

I have now scrapped that theory. This book is a real black eye to everyone involved in the process. I won't trust that just because it is an Unleashed book that it is going to be a good, in-depth and accurate discussion any longer.

The best way I can describe this book is as follows. Did you ever take a class from someone who didn't really know the subject matter, and as a consequence made the class far more confusing than is should have been? Well, put that class in a book and this is what you end up with. It served to confuse and frustrate more than enlighten.

I am sure this book contained technical errors as well, but my feedback is more about the flow and readability of the book. If you are looking to learn Oracle, this book would not be a wise selection for you.

There are plenty of decent Oracle books out there to choose from.

This just isn't one of them.

Don't waste your money ... trust me! This book tries to cover all areas of Oracle without providing much information on any single topic. It's basically one thick catalog of Oracle products.

If you can't find at least 10 errors before you finish Chapter 1, you're just not paying attention. You'll find typos, incomplete or incoherent sentences, grammatical errors, punctuation errors, etc. If the authors are that careless during the inroduction, how can you trust their technical information? Thank goodness I didn't open the CD-ROM -- I'm returning this junk (2nd edition) asap. The authors should be ashamed of publishing such careless and sloppy work.

I have worked with computers, database software, and technical writing for over 15 years. This was the worst collection of stuff I have seen both on the page and on the phone with the so-called help desk. Chapters were out of order. Instructions were missing. A complete waste of $40.

I bought this book just becuase it is in the Unleashed Series. I had great luck with MS SQL Server 6.5 Unleashed and Active Server Unleashed. I guess I just thought this would be good. Oh, well. If you haven't purchased tons of Oracle tools, half the book is useless. The authors treat Oracle like the greatest thing since sliced bread (there must be something bad to say about it). I tried to use this book to get started with Oracle, but I just couldn't do it. I like having actual books, but I've found the Oracle online docs, while a pain to sort through, are much more helpful. This book is ready for my next garage sale.
