Book Description

0078823897 978-0078823893 January 1998 1
This solution-oriented resource, revised for Oracle8, focuses exclusively on issues related to backup and recovery. It begins with a background discussion on Oracle's architecture, then delves into topics such as: backup principles - physical and logical backups, backup commands; backup scripts - specific scripts to run in a VMS or UNIX environment; recovery principles and methods; and diagnostic tools and debugging techniques. This edition includes a set of backup and recovery techniques and ten new case studies, which should nearly double the case-study section in page count. The case studies cover issues such as tablespace, point-in-time recovery, recovering an altered table and recovering a partitioned table. The book provides real-world solutions to actual backup and recovery issues in Oracle8. Rama Velpuri is the author of "Oracle Backup and Recovery Handbook 7.3".

1.0 out of 5 stars Outdated, should be rewritten, February 4, 2000
By
Marc-Oliver Ihm (Mainz Deutschland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Oracle8 Backup and Recovery Handbook (Paperback)
As oracle has intoduced rman with version 8 as its primary backup tool, I expected the book to dwell mainly on the new tool and explain features, usage and common procedures for backup/recovery with rman in depth. All of this is missing. Barely 60 pages are devoted to rman and half of them is about creating a standby database (which is not what I want right now !). I think this book had it merits in Version 7 and probably it covers all the old stuff very well, but it is nearly useless for version 8. Unfortunately there seems to be no better book on this subject right now.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Little description of RMAN, November 18, 1999
This review is from: Oracle8 Backup and Recovery Handbook (Paperback)
This book has a very little descrition of RMAN, which is new to Oracle 8. I thought this book might cover RMAN and an integration with Legato, Networker or any other third party backup solution product, a little bit , but it did not. It is still a good conceptual book.

I found this book to be wonderfully helpful in every aspect of the backup and recovery process. It addresses everything from planning to disaster recovery, including documented backup and recovery examples. I highly recommend this book as a reference and a day-to-day resource.
