As oracle has intoduced rman with version 8 as its primary backup tool, I expected the book to dwell mainly on the new tool and explain features, usage and common procedures for backup/recovery with rman in depth. All of this is missing. Barely 60 pages are devoted to rman and half of them is about creating a standby database (which is not what I want right now !). I think this book had it merits in Version 7 and probably it covers all the old stuff very well, but it is nearly useless for version 8. Unfortunately there seems to be no better book on this subject right now.

This book has a very little descrition of RMAN, which is new to Oracle 8. I thought this book might cover RMAN and an integration with Legato, Networker or any other third party backup solution product, a little bit , but it did not. It is still a good conceptual book.

I found this book to be wonderfully helpful in every aspect of the backup and recovery process. It addresses everything from planning to disaster recovery, including documented backup and recovery examples. I highly recommend this book as a reference and a day-to-day resource.

I have no doubt in my mind to rate this book as the best book on Backup and recovery.
I used it for Oracle version 7 and 8 and the technique and the principles are still useful in Oracle 9i and 10g.
This book has served as the life saver for several bay-area DBA I worked with.
If you just go through the case studies, you will understand the basic principles of Oracle backups and recovery which will help you in any sort of disaster. Many Oracle support engineers used this book as guidelines.
I wish there could be another updated version for the latest releases.

The book hasn't changed much since the Version 6 edition. Velpuri still doesn't cover the "Consistent" export parameter even after the publisher was notified several times! Also, the book badly needs diagrams to illustrate some of the more difficult technical discussions.

This is the most important book for DBA's to read, and really understand. When RMAN & SAPDBA take a dump all over your database, you had better hope that you have often repeated the exercises in this book & have understood the concepts explained there in.

2AM on a Sunday night and operations can't start the database, and RMAN is out, and ls says your data is gone, and fsck is complaining & etc...you better hope you have it together as per this book.

This book is the major jump off point on the road to getting (and keeping) 6 figures.

Buy it, and spend a year or so studying it.

Even though the authors have tried to illustrate the backup strategies for Oracle8, the book tends to be too basic for a professional to use.

Rama's book ( like the rest of his other ones) is a life-saver. He has a unique way of presenting pertinent information ( which otherwise could have been obtained the hard way ) to the DBA. His writings on Oracle are the finest pieces out there now. He evokes the why's, what's and how to's with such clarity and accuracy that he implicitly brings added value to any DBA's overall ability and confidence level. He is without a doubt, a bonafide AUTHORITY in his field. It is a MUST HAVE.
