5.0 out of 5 stars Beginner's Source of Information - Oracle8 Bible
As a novice in using Oracle, I found this book to be most invaluable for clearing up the finishing details for Oracle database manipulation. I had no experience with Oracle8 and when asked to set up a server and workstation with Oracle then create a database and a front-end I was a little intimidated. I used "Oracle8 on Windows NT" by Lillian Hobbs to get it...

3.0 out of 5 stars Re: It is a Favorite for Newbies
<Oracle 8 Bible> is my first purchase on Oracle stuffs. For a naive newbie, it is appealing since it has a lot of pictures and a step by step walkthrough on different aspects of Oracle. Each concept is explained in quite a simple way. Even today, I still find the discussion on import/export very useful and I keep on referring them from time to time.

The book is intended for the newbie market. You will be disappointing if you have quite substantial experience and want the book a great reference. For one thing, the book focuses too much on Oracle in the NT environment and you will find helpless if you are working in an Unix environment.

I still make use of its reference from time to time. Its command reference is still much easy and clear to use than the Oracle manual.

In a word, it would be a great "bible" for newbies.

As a novice in using Oracle, I found this book to be most invaluable for clearing up the finishing details for Oracle database manipulation. I had no experience with Oracle8 and when asked to set up a server and workstation with Oracle then create a database and a front-end I was a little intimidated. I used "Oracle8 on Windows NT" by Lillian Hobbs to get it going, "The SQL Guide to ORACLE", by Rick F. van der Lans to get a feel for SQL commands and now "Oracle8 Bible" has become my reference of choice. It is very comprehensive (as far as this rookie can tell), the examples are clear and concise, and I look forward to trying out the ideas put forth regarding Oracle8 Object and Large Object Datatypes. Thanks Carol

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Beginners and intermediate designers/DBA, February 4, 2000

You must read the book from the start to the end. Understand and practice well to get the knowledge the book likes to deliver. When you finish the book, you will feel, you know how to design and Adminstrate the Oracle databases. Practically you should work on the book examples as well as your own. Just reading will not help you.

Well explained & systematically topic by topic structured book. Serious readers can go through it. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! Doesn't assume you know everything., September 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Oracle8 Bible (Paperback)
This book takes you step by step through the process and fills in the little but important details that Oracle published books assume you must already know. Written in an easy to understand manner. Complete command reference is alphabetized for easy access.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a good reference, May 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Oracle8 Bible (Paperback)
I bought this book because the reviews here said it was well written and useful. I found it to be neither. It does have some information on the OEM tools. Basically, it seems to be more of a dictionary of Oracle terms than a practical guide to using the program.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well organized approach, July 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Oracle8 Bible (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that the book concentrated its attention on using the Oracle Enterprise Manager for DBA tasks. So many of the other books display a definite bias toward the "old ways" ... meaning SQL*Plus scripts and such. Which is fine (I've uesed this method for 8 years) ... but why not take advantage of the new way of doing things? Instead of rehashing Oracle 7 scripts to work with Oracle 8, I thought this was a fresh approach to Oracle 8 on its own grounds. Of course, the book also has its share of SQL*Plus scripts (for those who refuse to migrate to a GUI environment).

The part I like best, however, is the organization. Too many times people who are technically competent have difficulty expressing their ideas in a written language. Too often, authors require that you make mental organizational notes before you understand what they're trying to say. This book is different. The organization is apparent ... and I liked that.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not helpful at all!, March 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Oracle8 Bible (Paperback)
I bought this book on the advice of the previous recommendations-- Frankly, I really wonder what a two or one star book would look like! The book is positively DISMAL in its explanation of setting up and tuning Oracle databases. It seems as if it runs upon a dilemma: If you know enough to understand this book, you probably don't need it. If you don't know all that much about Oracle already, this book can't help you. The only thing it has that may be interesting is an index of SQL commands.

I have had pretty good luck with other IDG books in the past, but this one is worse than if I were muddling along without it. At least then I would know was in the dark!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Overall, April 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Oracle8 Bible (Paperback)
I bought this book along with the "Black Book" for NT. I have used it repeatedly as a reference for both SQL commands (the back) and different SQL structures (cursors, packages, etc.) I found the Black Book better at explaining how to install, configure, and run Oracle8, but now that it is up, this is my most used reference.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for new Oracle Developers and new DBAs!, January 7, 1999
This review is from: Oracle8 Bible (Paperback)
This text is very well organized. I've used some of the "Oracle Press" text and they are very poorly structured. However, Oracle8 Bible did not cover anything on SQL*Loader. As a DBA/Developer myself, I do keep it as my number two text when it comes to SQL.

I would recommend this book to new DBAs and Oracle developers. It's easy reading, easy to find want you're looking for and very complete. The OEM is presented in a user-friendly manner. Buy this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Overall Coverage, July 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Oracle8 Bible (Paperback)
The book provides an excellent overview of all the concepts with Oracle8. It also covers the latest object technology with Oracle8 and provides a step by step guide to use it. Lastly, the PL/SQL section serves as a good reference guide to plug and play SQL commands.
