an excellent book on oracle,
By
This review is from: Oracle8I for Windows Nt Starter Kit (Oracle Press) (Paperback)
I've tried many oracle books for developer, dba, beginner, etc but only got disappointed until this book. It teaches you how to install oracle8i with timely and clear comments and explanations at certain critical installation moments; On the pl/sql, the author stays focused, step by step, on what pl/sql is, how it works, the difference between anonymous and stored procedures, the differences between and among procedure, function, triggers, sequence, index, package, etc. He is assertive but pleasant on his views on pl/sql and its apparently inevitable evolution: stored procedure using java, therefore you have a much clearer picture of the relationship between traditional solution using pl/sql and new solution using java. This book is not only with oracle developers on mind but oracle dba as well. It shows you step by step examples of database backup and recovery and system tuning. I guess that the author has tried his best to generate the best 'dummy' yet highly practical working examples on backup and recovery possible for readers to try on their machines. I commend the author's effort and strongly recommend this book without reservation.

Well worth it...,
This review is from: Oracle8I for Windows Nt Starter Kit (Oracle Press) (Paperback)
Chuck pretty much says it all, but I thought I would add a review since there is only one other. I needed a book to help me with Oracle on NT. Not 10 other system but specifically on NT. I was not interested in developing huge databases or complex designs. I wanted a book that would take me through installation, tell me about setting it up and then the basics on using it. This book does exactly that. If you want to read on then it goes into greater detail. It does come with the full enterprise edition (60 days eval I think) which is also great considering that I was not due to get the full licenced version for some weeks after. I looked at all the other books on the shelf, but in you want to know about Oracle on NT from a beginners level, this book stands out.

After reading reviews from pervious 2 user I feel like adding few lines about this book. I have been working as an Oracle consultant for over 4 years and also teach Oracle 8 and 8i on corporate level and in Universities in Chicago land area(part-time). Enough about me... I recommend this book for anyone getting started in Oracle. Excellent coverage of Oracle fundamentals, Oracle 8i installation on NT, good examples on Pl/Sql and java based SQL statements. I have prepared many presentation from this book and I own almost all books from Oracle press. Oracle 8i is the database of the future. But, unfortunately industry is moving so fast which makes it very tough for authors to keep up and cover what users like you and me expect when they purchase books. Oracle 8i is actually in 3 versions first version of 8i is also known as 8.1.5. Second version is 8.1.6 and Oracle 8.1.7 is going to be out sometime this fall. This book covers only 8.1.5. What can I tell you... WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF ORACLE.... Oracle is not just database anymore it is more than a database. More info is available on Oracle web-site... Good luck

may be already out dated !,
By faysal alzabit (Chapel Hill, NC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Oracle8I for Windows Nt Starter Kit (Oracle Press) (Paperback)
To start with this book is badly bonded (it started brakingapart after the first day); the author targets NT 4.0 platform and Oracle version 8.1.5; what I have is windows 2000 server and Oracle 8.1.6; if you are in the same position you will find that their is discrepancies between the book and Oracle GUI (for example, Net8 assistance does not have service Name and SID fields when you click on one of the service names) and the way the services starts on windows 2000 platform. I bought this book because I was moving from SQL Server 7.0 to Oracle, I found that this book helped me start oracle but it took me a long time to figure the discrepancies. I think this book might be already out dated. The book language is really good and easy to understand (provided that you have a technical background). Finally the support files for the book is not on the CD and no where to be found at the mentioned web site...

Reader's review,
This review is from: Oracle8I for Windows Nt Starter Kit (Oracle Press) (Paperback)
This is a very well written book. Reading it and doing the exercises are really good learning experience for me. I had no problems in following through the exercises although I had no prior knowledge on SQL. The CD works. The most satisfying part for me is I got the same answers as displayed in the book, except where there is a date involved - the date might have been 19-May-99 in the book and I got 10-3-00- as it should. I rush out to bookstores to look for more books by the same author on Oracle 8i. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn about Oracle 8i. Could you please pass on to the author my compliments to him and I look forward to reading more books by him.

This book teaches you everything you need to know to get started on using oracle for building web-based applications. Concepts are clearly explained and chapters are very concise and organized. Took me about a week to finish this book.

Should be more NT oriented,
This review is from: Oracle8I for Windows Nt Starter Kit (Oracle Press) (Paperback)
The book's title is misleading. The Oracle 8i section is OK for starters, but the NT section is disappointing. It only takes one through the installation process and doesn't cover basic things like: how to create and drop NT services manually (a common problem), good 3rd party products for Oracle on NT like backup utilities, particular differences between NT and other platforms, problems with the installation of the RDBMS and other Oracle products. My opinion is that if the book's name is Oracle 8i on NT it should have more than one section on NT.

It actually delivers,

I knew enough to "do what I had to do" in MS SQL 7, then get back to coding a web app. All I wanted was to do the same thing with Oracle - not so easy, Oracle is a beast. After wasting two weeks with a "Sam's Teach Yourself" I cut my losses (Can I send them a bill for my time?) and went for this one. It's unreal, if you know nothing about Oracle, this book is an easy (and short!) read that will get you up and running quickly.

This book is worth it's weight in gold! All the other Oracle books assume that you have a firm knowledge of Oracle. This one is the first that I have seen that is for TRUE beginners. While other books will simply say "run xxx script" this book explains, "click start, programs, etc, etc, etc". Being an MCSE allready helps in understanding a few things in this book where the OS is concerned but where Oracle is concerned the Author assumes that you can't even spell Database, and that is exactelly what I was looking for. For people that want to learn Oracle from the basement up this is the starting point right here!

This is an excellent starter book on Oracle Administration. It covers all areas of Oracle Database from basic SQL to installation and basic administration. Also includes trial Oracle Database. Highly recomended to get started even though it is a little out of date.
