The most useful and complete DBA book,
By Gamal Abd El-Shafy Ebrahim (Cairo, Egypt) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Oracle8i DBA Handbook with CDROM (Oracle Press) (Paperback)
This book is a very useful book for both experienced DBA and Beginners as well as for an application developer. It gives a complete coverage of Oracle 8i DBA as well as Oracle 7.xA large number of examples and tips that helps DBA to perfectly tune an Oracle database. Very usefel chapters about database tunning these help me to perfectly tune our Oracle databases. and to enhance its performance. A very useful appendix of the most commonly used SQL commands in database administration. I have read a large number of books in Oracle DBA, this book is the most useful one. I refer to this book every day in my work. It is a very good investment. If you intend to buy a book in Oracle DBA buy this book now.

ORACLE 8i DBA .............BEST BUY,
This review is from: Oracle8i DBA Handbook with CDROM (Oracle Press) (Paperback)
Very well explained and enough examples for you to get started if you are a beginning your career in ORACLE Database Administration or if you are an expert this book covers all the topics of Oracle DBA along with some Java. But this book does not cover ORACLE PL/SQL programming. Covers Oracle Networking on NT & Unix. Since Oracle 8i is web-enabled software for you to understand Oracle 8i programming better you will also need to buy "ORACLE 8i SQLJ PROGRAMMING" as well as "ORACLE8 PL/SQL PROGRAMMING" by Oracle press.

Useful and complete,

This book would be good both for beginners and for experienced DBAs. There are definite beginner parts, as well as tricks and scripts that more experienced DBAs should like to have. Skip the parts that don't apply to your level. Overall a good read, no errors yet.

This is a useful book, but...,
By Mary Licata (Lenexa, KS) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Oracle8i DBA Handbook with CDROM (Oracle Press) (Paperback)
Loney and Theriault have put together quite a compendium of information about Oracle. I have created the command center database for my employer and used the tuning information many times. I did discover a discrepancy with the information relating to temp tablespaces. The book states that temp segments are constantly created, extended, and then dropped. The Oracle server documentation states that temp segments are not dropped, but continue to expand and are reused by multiple processes. This caused a great deal of confusion until we did more research. I find this book to be very useful otherwise, but would recommend crosschecking information (not just from this book but from any book) with a variety of sources when troubleshooting a problem.

Good Content,
This review is from: Oracle8i DBA Handbook with CDROM (Oracle Press) (Paperback)
I found the content of the book to be well structured and very informative. Good reference for any DBA as well as a great starter book for the less experienced DBA.I only wish that Mr. Loney went into more detail with monitoring and tuning.

Great book. It covered OEM v2.0 and Performance Tunning Packs which is much better than reading the online documentation. Plus good sample scripts to monitoring multiple databases.

The book is thick, and god only knows why! I have been preparing for the Oracle Certification exam. Numerous times I have tried looking up parameter definitions, and they are not to be found in the index! Try licking through all the pages! For example, the book is very convoluted about steps required to set up a spanking new database, along with a pool of users. Nowhere does it delineates ALL the steps. Granted I may know that after wading through all the chapters, but try doing that with a finite project deadline... Save your money and buy a better book.

Very informative book on various DBA Tasks,
By "rateneum" (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Oracle8i DBA Handbook with CDROM (Oracle Press) (Paperback)
This is a very informative book containing info on the common and everyday tasks a DBA would need to perform on the job. It covers everything a DBA should know and has some tips. It's written in an easy-to-follow language and it's also "fun" to read. It's a pleasure to read plus you'll get so much info out of this. This is a very useful resource especially for someone just starting out in the field of Oracle. Any experienced DBA should already know this info, and rather should be reading manuals then books like these. But for everybody else this is excellent and certainly should be part of any DBA's library. Even if this just for review. Each page is filled with useful and good information. A very good resource! One of my favorite Oracle Press books.

It really depends on the reader...,
This review is from: Oracle8i DBA Handbook with CDROM (Oracle Press) (Paperback)
It is a good Oracle reference that covers well many aspects of day-to-day Oracle administration. It might be very good for beginners, but if you are an experienced DBA, there is not too much new information you can find here. There are no strong real-world examples, advanced or undocumented features in this book. Everything is 'standard' DBA stuff that you can easily find in Oracle's Documentation if you need a fast reference. Again, if you are a beginner-to-intermediate DBA trying to consolidate your knowledge, this book may be very appropriate for you. But if you already are an experienced DBA digging after 'something special' (you know what I mean), then you should look for something else (something like Oracle 24x7 Tips & Techniques).

For me this book has been worthless,

Bottom line, almost every time I have turned to this book for an answer it has totally let me down. Unfortunately I have had this book for several years and am just now getting around to writing my first review.
I admit I'm not a DBA. I'm a developer that occasionally has to perform, and sometimes just wants some understanding of, DBA tasks. Every time I have opened this book it has either not had enough information on the subject or just doesn't even mention it. It has gotten to the point that every time I get an inclination to open the book I tell myself not to; only to think maybe this time it will for once be helpful; only to be let down once again :) I have a lot of respect for the authors so my hope is I'm just not using the book as it was intended. Maybe my dissatisfaction has something to do with the fact that I'm not a pure DBA or that I have used it more as a reference as opposed to reading it cover-to-cover as bedtime reading. Even so I wouldn't think it would make a huge difference. For me the Complete Reference series has served me much better. |
