A must buy for the Oracle DBA,
This review is from: Oracle9i New Features (Paperback)
This book is one of the best Oracle Press books I have purchased. This book is clear, concise, and has very few errors. Other books from Oracle can have pages of fluff with long-winded examples; this book tells you what you need to know about 9i.I purchased this book solely to pass the 9i New Features OCP exam. Most of the questions on the test are covered well by the author. This book will also make a great reference for future use.

This book is good for someone with strong Oracle background. If you are a starter and want to get familiar with Oracle 9i then you are better off purchasing Oracle 9i DBA Handbook. You must know all features of Oracle 8i before even thinking about buying this book. Examples and contents in this book are explained very well. I will give this book 4 stars ...

A clear and concise book about such a complex topic.,

So far the best book I have read while moving from one version of Oracle database to another. I started with Oracle 6. I agree with all previous reviews. The book has zero extra fat. Covers many important new features in Oracle 9i (as one reviewer has already mentioned 9i is a completely new database version) with brief examples. Some less important topics got only cursory coverage. The book is a must read for all experienced Oracle DBA's who are familiar with Oracle 8i.

Great new features book!,

This book really delivers on its promise. Each time Oracle has released a new database version, many DBAs would be looking for a good reference to summarize and explain the new features for that version, and how to use them. Until now, there has never really been a good reference for experienced DBAs to mull over. There was only a few, non-exhaustive references for 8i, even less for 8, and almost nothing for 7. Robert has done an excellent job in hitting the most important points for all the new features, showing us how to use them, and providing accurate, workable code and syntax. His style is lively, and keeps you interested, which is in direct contrast to Oracle documentation and many other books and articles, which are way too dry. This is a great book, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to any experienced DBA that needs a succinct starting point on Oracle9i. Robert, can't wait to see what you do for 10i! :-)

The best Oracle9i new features overview,
By
This review is from: Oracle9i New Features (Paperback)
As an Oracle instructor, I am always on the lookout for good books on cutting-edge topics. Mr. Freeman has really come through on this one.The text has lots of clear working examples, and does not obfuscate the issues with terse jargon. I use this book in all my Oracle9i new features classes, and I highly recommend it for any experienced Oracle professional who wants to learn the new features of Oracle9i.

Got this book today finally! From what I have read I like the writer's style and approach. No fluff, just here's what you were looking for.. the new features. Many books waste precious trees explaining to dbas what a tablespace is. This book doesn't. I recommend this book to any dba just moving to 9i or considering it.

Freeman the man!,

I've been using Freeman's books for OCP upgrades in the past and they were good. This time he hasn't written an OCP book, I still got this one hoping to use it as a supplemental training material. Let's make it clear - it is not an OCP upgrade guide! It doesn't provide any practice questions and doesn't follow the test objectives closely enough. But as a new features overview this book is really nice. It gives you an impression that you met this guy somewhere in the office and he got a minute to tell you about the 9i. The book is easy to read, full of humor. It is also not too long and it took me one evening to read it. But, frankly, some topics are just barely mentioned. Overall, it's a great starting point to learn about 9i.

Great overview of 9i features,
By A Customer
This review is from: Oracle9i New Features (Paperback)
This book is an excellent overview of the Oracle 9i new features. I would recommend this to DBAs, programmers and the like who would like a concise, high-level overview of the numerous features available in 9i without getting so far into the details that it becomes burdensome to read (that's what manuals are for.)Some of the new features were missing and there were a few mistakes, but I was able to pass the 9i upgrade exam using this book and the SelfTest software. Overall a worthwhile book (the only book as far as I know) for an introduction to the new features of 9i.

Not sufficient for 9i upgrade exam, a good start towards 9i,
By Muhammad Niaz (Norwalk, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Oracle9i New Features (Paperback)
This book is a good overview of Oracle 9i new features but if you want to pass the 9i upgrade exam this book will not be sufficient and you will need to go back to full reference manual.
