Book Description

The authors had several goals in mind when they decided to write this book: (1) to engage readers to think about the skills, choices, and consequences of their communication; (2) to create a book that people will want to read; (3) to convince readers that communication skills will improve their chances for success in all endeavors; (4) and to provide a reasonably priced book. The text’s interactive approach is designed to draw readers into the learning process. Activities and exercises interspersed throughout the chapters prompt readers to think critically about the information in each section to participate in discussions that reinforce and expand on the concepts in this concise approach to the study of communication. Written in an informal style, this book includes real-life examples that resonate with people who hold either traditional or nontraditional views. Scattered throughout the book are sidebars authored by corporate professionals, highlighting particular communication skills that have contributed to their success and providing valuable insights for readers wishing to enrich their own lives by becoming better communicators.

From the Back Cover

"The text has all the essentials for a general education speech class, and our students appreciate the `no frills' economy of the book. Oral Communication, 2/E actually has one of the most coherent discussions of persuasive speech techniques I've found in any text." -- Karl Payton, LeTourneau University --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

This review is from: Oral Communication: Skills, Choices, and Consequences (Paperback)
This is an awesome book for kids going off to college. The books interactive approach to teaching about communication skills draws the reader into the book, making learning about the various nuances of communication a fun thing, and very understandable. I highly recomend it to students and non-students alike!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for (certain) Students, December 20, 2011
I took a Speech class and this was the assigned textbook. Overall I felt the book was really helpful. The class was an online class, and I genuinely feel like I learned a lot from this book since we did not have lectures.
The voice of the authors in the book were interesting and this made it an easy read. I have a short attention span when it comes to textbooks, but the way the author talked TO the reader instead of talking to himself really helped keep my interest.
My only complaint is that this book is only directed to the average freshman/sophomore year student. Being an adult who returned to college, I felt that some of the examples didn't relate to me.
