5.0 out of 5 stars Compared to WaterPik...
Seven years ago, my dentist recommended that I use an oral irrigator with a 50/50 solution of water and Listerine to control and reduce a potential for gingivitis. I purchased a WaterPik and used it daily with good results. Until it broke--as did three others that followed (although one of them, a travel model, was used much less). Frustrated, I replaced them with the...

I have had two of these machines. The first one broke (irrigator stopped working although motor was running fine) and was fixed under warranty. After about a year it broke again, and since the cost to fix was close to the purchase price I bought a new one. Second one lasted about 2 years, then irrigator broke again. While using this machine I always received good reviews from my periodontist evey 3-4 months when I had my teeth cleaned (I always irrigated with mixture of water and listerine). When my last one quit in February, I did not replace it. My last two visits to the periodontist show my gums are not doing as well. So despite the poor reliablity experience I have had, I am getting another one. To comment on the lack of pressure, I don't look at this as a replacement for flossing, only as a way to reduce gum problems. I have always used a Waterpik in conjuntion with the Oxy Jet, and the Waterpik of course is great for getting food out from between the teeth.

Frustrated, I replaced them with the Braun unit. In the two years I have had it, my gums, in the words of my dentist, "are extraordinarily healthy" and the "best" he's seen.

Yes, the pressure of the Braun, as noted by another reviewer, is less than that of a WaterPik, but as any good dentist or oral hygienist will tell you, irrigation is not meant to replace flossing, brushing and other good hygienic habits. Instead, the Braun's rotating head and strong, pulsating spray massages gums at the gumline, behind bridgework and around dental implants to keep these areas healthy and disease free by rinsing away loosened plaque and food particles. My regular teeth cleanings are a snap, since my teeth accumulate hardly any plaque. I can recommend this unit just as my dentist now recommends it to his other patients.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not enough pressure, April 29, 2002
By A Customer

I read the reviews of other buyers, that there was not enough pressure to properly clean out food particles between teeth, but because I have used and liked Braun products before, I bought the Oxyjet anyways.
I can only say that, if you are looking for a device to replace flossing in a pinch, this is nothing close. Even on the highest setting, there was barely enough pressure to dislodge even larger particles.
I have braces, and because flossing is sometimes a 20 minute ordeal, I like to have the option to use an oral irrigator in a pinch.
SO....even to Braun fans like myself, if you expect cleaning power, keep looking.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not enough pressure, July 15, 2001
By A Customer

I am using a Water Pik oral irrigator for years and always wanted this unit, because Braun products are usually superior, and if it is just for looks...Beware of this unit, however, if you want strong water pressure, which will really remove food from between your teeth and give you a good gum massage,(which is essential in preventing those bloody 'pockets' from developing between tooth and gum which are called Gingivitis);this unit won't deliver. ....

The Oral B Irrigator takes the hassle out of brushing. The combination of water and air leaves the mouth and teeth with a clean refreshing feeling. The ability to adjust the pressure settings is especially helpful in the hard to reach areas. Areas where plaque is likely to form and hard to reach with a conventional tooth brush. I have used an irrigator for over two years and my dental checkups have greatly improved. It is easy to use and is affordable. My mouth would not feel the same without it. Every bathroom should have one to aid in maintaining good oral hygiene!

I bought one and it didn't work at all. Maybe I just got a bad one, but since I had such a bad experience with the first one I'd like to try something else.
