In sharp contradisnction to currently popular theories of "orality vs literacy" Finnegan's work offers a much more nuanced approach grounded in a life work in anthropology.

Substantial study of oral traditions in poetry,

This is an interesting scholarly discussion of oral poetic traditions, and my one serious qualm with it is that the author, while recognizing poetry as performance, fails to bring into her thesis any serious discussion of Dylan and the direction pop lyrics took under his influence.
