More About the Author

For 25 years, I've told people to take a hike. And they have!

I've written two dozen books and more than a thousand articles about hiking and nature. My newest book is THE HIKER'S WAY: HIKE SMART, LIVE WELL, GO GREEN. I wrote it to teach fellow hikers and newcomers about the fine art of hiking.

When I'm not out hiking, I'm home with my family in Santa Barbara and trying to keep up on the blog at www.TheTrailmaster.com

I was fortunate to be able to hike--and write about--trails in California, as well as across the country and around the world during an 18-year long stint as the Los Angeles Times hiking columnist. Some of my trail accounts, mapped and updated, are collected in my guidebooks. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, A DAY HIKER'S GUIDE is my "greatest hits" collection for that region.

When it comes to hiking California, sometimes I get carried away. I solo-hiked the coast and wrote a narrative account of my adventure: A WALK ALONG LAND'S END: DISPATCHES FROM THE EDGE OF CALIFORNIA ON A 1,600-MILE HIKE FROM MEXICO TO OREGON.

I'm very happy when my writing proves to be inspirational to someone along this great pathway we call life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Nice Orange County Hiking Guide., November 26, 2007
By
This review is from: Orange County, A Day Hiker's Guide (Paperback)
Hiking and outdoor recreation is not the first thing that comes to mind when most people think about Orange County. Strip Malls and suburbs are a common motif, though nice beaches have always figured into the OC lifestyle. But Orange County also includes numerous wildlands within its borders and John McKinney, long time hiking columnist for the LA Times discusses many of them in this nice little volume. Crystal Cove State Park, the South Coast Wilderness, Orange County's regional park system, and of course the Cleveland National Forest all receive write ups in this book. McKinney also includes some hikes in Riverside County which generally receives very little attention among outdoor authors.

On the whole, I thought this was a nice book, though I will still turn to Jerry Schad's fine Afoot and Afield: Orange County first when seeking new hikes. Readers should be aware, however, that the 2007 fires have dramatically altered the landscape, particularly in the Cleveland National Forest. It may be years before some of the trails, such as those in Santiago and Modjeska Canyons reopen. Untill that happens, those looking to truly experience the wild side of the OC should confine themselves to the coastal wilderness.
