From Booklist

After five years of criminal exile, young witch Cierra is brought back to civilization. Under the care of the Special Witch and Warlock Squadron, Cierra must learn to deal with a changed world while hiding the dangerous changes within herself and her magic. Perry has crafted an intriguing, if imperfect, world. Part dark fantasy and part science fiction, his tale is full of action and unique details. Chapter breaks explaining those details show a lack of confidence in his readers and betray his inexperience, and while he doesn’t make the mistake of rushing his story too much for a first volume, the ending doesn’t stand on its own as well as it should. Kawakami’s art has a desert-punk feel that supports Perry’s story well, but the sharp edges that it relies on are blunted by overuse of screentones. The sound effects are in kanji without a translation, which is unfortunately standard for Tokyopop titles, making reading tricky in several parts. All of these elements combine to make an interesting read, but a secondary manga purchase. Grades 8-12. --Snow Wildsmith

4.0 out of 5 stars thanks, that was good, where's volume 2? <3, April 9, 2009
This review is from: Orange Crows (Paperback)
Ages 10 and up ish [complex ideas/emotions, some not very graphic but existent violence]

Pretty solid art, told the story well. The toning wasn't good in the first chapter but by the end it was definitely more good than bad.

Writing was also pretty solid, but Orange Crows has it's own WORLD going on and because of that, all the ideas felt extremely crammed in. @_@ I LIKE the ideas, but there wasn't enough page space to investigate them all properly.

Also of interest... it kind of amused me that the writer and artist, both guys, managed to write and draw some pretty good female characters. Cierra was a pretty good heroine, there was no point at which I cringed reading her. <~ this is probably my biggest complement to the series. There's only one other series I can think of [Red River] in which the female lead is my favorite character.

I would definitely be into a second volume of this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Manga that deserves a better spot light, July 12, 2010

*Critical Note: Volume 2 of this series will not be released unless more people express interest in the series by buying it. The publisher TokyoPop refuses to allow volume 2 to be publish unless more people purchase this book.*

This was the first manga book I decided to read.
Believe it or not my best friend is one of the creators of this series.
Saying that, I'm going to do my best to give an unbias review of the book.

The story starts off a little bit slow, it reminds me of the beginning of Full Metal Alchemist.
But by the next page, that reference is gone. The story becomes original and each page greatly moves the story along. There is no "filler" or random stuff to be found, each page has a meaning. Battles, background information on characters, plot twists, new spells, new enemies, new foes, and more!

If you're a manga fan and liked Full Metal Alchemist, Dragon Ball Z, Kaze no Stigma, or stories with spell casting and battles galore this is a great series! Oh and not only are the battles well done, the story is well thought out.

The story starts off with a witch name, Cierra being banish out of high technological city (yes spells and technology combine!). She survives there for some time, then a group of elite witch hunters are sent to find her and bring her back into society to see if she has repented for what she did. I can't give more away of the story, because like I said each page is a new development. There is a free preview of it on some sites as well, if you want to view it before you buy it.
