Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Orange Guard, Inc. was formed by Carmel Valley resident and inventor, Tor McPartland, who was looking for an alternative to conventional insecticides. The inspiration for Orange Guard came from McPartlands desire to find an alternative to these insecticides which have the potential of long-term health and environmental dangers. In 1984, McPartland read an article in Science News, where someone had taken citrus hand cleaner and poured it down a fire ant hill. Every ant was killed. "If you ever look at oranges, you'll notice that the peels are never bitten into by anything," says McPartland. "Orange peel is a natural repellent." Starting in 1985, McPartland spent the next 14 years in research and development efforts, including extensive testing and certification for safety and effectiveness. In May 1998, McPartland introduced his first product to consumers. That product was Orange Guard, a water based indoor/outdoor insecticide that may be used around food, humans and pets. Made from d-Limonene (orange peel extract) and inert ingredients, Orange Guard is EPA-registered and now available to consumers. Works naturally on ants, fire ants, roaches, fleas, silverfish, aphids, spider mites, leaf hoppers, scale insects, and other insect pests.

Product Description

FROM MANUFACTURER WEBSITE How does Orange Guard Kill insects? The active ingredient d-Limonene (orange peel extract) destroys the wax coating of the insect's respiratory system. Yes, without worry, no need to evacuate the house. Easy clean up with damp cloth or sponge. Remember to read and follow directions on the label. How safe is Orange Guard? Orange Guard is a water-based insecticide. All ingredients in Orange Guard meet the G.R.A.S. (generally recognized as safe) standard set by FDA. d-Limonene is approved by the FDA as a food additive, and is found in products such as fruit cakes, cleaners, degreasers, air fresheners and pet shampoos. Orange Guard is 100% biodegradable and water-soluble. Orange Guard is listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute.

1.0 out of 5 stars Orange Guard is an Ant Repellant NOT a Killer!!, April 19, 2009

This review is from: Orange Guard Water Based Home Pest Control - 1 Gallon Bottle 101 (Lawn & Patio)
I used Orange Guard on several fire ant mounds, using the manufacturer's instructions of 3 to 1 diluted AND full strength. The mounds were ABANDONED. There were absolutely no ant carcasses to be found AND here is the important point, mounds appeared nearby in short order where there were none before. For emphasis and clarity, I repeat, even at full strength, Orange Guard DID NOT KILL fire ants, it just made them move. If you want to kill fire ants in the most earth friendly way, use boiling water. You will see dead ants, and except for the energy burned boiling water, no possible harm to the earth. BTW, as far as the spinosad based products such as Conserve, although safer than probably all previous such products, studies on spinosad show slight toxicity to birds, moderate toxicity to fish, and slight to moderate toxicity to aquatic invertebrates. However, it is highly toxic to bees and is highly toxic to oysters and other marine mollusks. Again, boiling water (as a nod to Ray Bradbury, I call it Farenheit 212) does no harm to any of these when applied to ant mounds. If you want an ant repellant, it does appear to accomplish that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Natural Flea Repeller-not killer?, September 11, 2007
By

This review is from: Orange Guard Water Based Home Pest Control - 1 Gallon Bottle 101 (Lawn & Patio)
I've been using this for several years for severe flea problems, I'd rather use this than chemicals or diatomaceous earth. I spray it everywhere-wood floors, upholstered furniture, on the rugs, animal sleeping spots, outside in the yard. It does make the floors slippery till it dries and after several uses can leave a sticky residue on linoleum or tile. No problem, just wash it off. Doesn't stain fabric (so far). BUT, I haven't seen it really kill fleas. I mean, I've put live fleas right in the stuff and they squirm around for ages and jump away if they can. Still, it definitely keeps the flea population down. Not as effective as a chemical spray, but it does work and isn't toxic. It says on the bottle not to use it directly on your pet, but I have, a bit diluted with water, with no ill effects. It doesn't make my cats drool and the dog doesn't mind it at all. It smells like oranges which may give some people a headache (my son complains about the smell). Overall, a good product that has it's place. I'll continue to use it. Oh, buy the gallon size and get a spray bottle to fill.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful tips to make it REALLY work, July 28, 2009

This review is from: Orange Guard Water Based Home Pest Control - 1 Gallon Bottle 101 (Lawn & Patio)
I have only used this to kill ants. Does it work? Absolutely. The trick is to spray enough to make them wet. They will die quickly. To keep them from coming back, the area must stay wet, don't wipe it up. When I first used this, I made the mistake of wiping it up after a few minutes as instructed and they always came back as soon as it was wiped up. Spray along the wall into the crevices where they are crawling in and they will not use that route to get in.

Porous surfaces are the best places to use this. For example, ants were attacking the water in the water bottle of my hamsters' cage (it's hot outside). I put the cage on some chux pads (absorbant pad on one side and water repellent plastic on the other), sprayed all around the cage. The ants kept coming in looking for water, but they can't get to the cage. They are all over the desk where my cage sits, but the cage is ant-free.

On more than one occasion, I've had an army full of ants in my dog's 5 gallon tin of dog food. I simply spray the container all around the exterior, killing all ants it immediately contacts and any ants unfortunate enough to cross the wet path. All other ants are repelled and run in circles within the container and on the lid to eventually all die. Ants outside the perimeter are left to find another food source.

The gallon size Orange Guard container comes with a manual spray pump attached by a thin flexible hose. I thought I'd be using it to refill my quart size bottle, but the spray handle is handy. I don't have to pour it out into a smaller bottle. Beware to shut off the spray nozzle before storing it. I neglected to do that and the Orange Guard leaked through the pump all over my laundry room. You know how those manual vacuum hoses they use to clean out fish tanks work? That's what happened with the Orange Guard.

Orange Guard is the only ant killer spray I use in the kitchen. It can get messy, but it works; and I don't worry so much about the kids and the dog. I do have one word of caution: this spray smells like strong citronella. Do not use it if you are sensitive to such fragrant scents.

UPDATE: The nozzle this came with eventually stopped working. I had to toss it and pour the Orange Guard into a smaller Orange Guard sprayer bottle.
