5.0 out of 5 stars ORANGE preview, December 26, 2009

For those of you new to the music of Jim Campilongo, you won't find a better place to start than right here with ORANGE. For those of you who are already fans, prepare yourself to be amazed.

Backburner - Follows the tradition of his hard-hitting album openers, but he's never opened more aggressively.

Awful Pretty, Pretty Awful - Upbeat and happy, guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Blues for Roy - A tribute to his main man, it simmers and bubbles to a full boil.

No Expectations - Slow bluesy cover of a Stones classic.

I'm Helen Keller and You're a Waffle Iron - Has that American Hips kind of vibe to it, but with more of a bad-a** attitude.

Orange - An unexpected acoustic treat, a first for a Jim Campilongo album... a real surprise and just beautiful.

Chelsea Bridge - Invokes images Jim's noir-ish Brooklyn existence.

Fingerpuppet - The longest cut on the album, this is Jim's magnum opus and an absolute crusher... turn it up LOUD.

Because You Like Trombone - Another acoustic surprise, very pretty.

I've Got Blisters On My Fingers - Jim gets funky, very cool.

Huckleberry - Another beautiful melody, has a nice country feel to it.

No Fun - Eeery and spooky, strangest Stooges cover you'll ever hear.

Maceo - And yet another beautiful melody, very nice again.

When You Wish Upon a Star - If Orange was a movie, this would be the perfect closing song as the credits roll by.

In addition to all this, Anton Fier's production results in crisp, clear sound from start to finish. The songs just flow into one another and fully demonstrate Jim's versatility and talent. Top it all off with the beautiful digipack cover art, and the verdict is clear: ORANGE is the new high mark for Jim Campilongo.

5.0 out of 5 stars from beginning to end a masterful release, February 27, 2010

i recently read an interview with campilongo in "vintage guitar mag," i had never heard of him before, but he referenced several of my guitar heroes and named the albums he was listening to when psyching up to make the "orange" release - and yes, the quirky, cool, funky, soulful aspects of jeff beck's guitar on "blow by blow" are evident in this release. however, this is not to say campilongo copies beck, rather he channels certain aspects of beck's vibe. in all truth, campilango is more versitile than beck - his atkins-like rendition of "awful pretty, pretty awful," is absolutely amazing. so, one could say that campilongo manages to channel the spirits of many great guitarists, all of whom delightfully haunt this album, and yet he's able to forge an original and signiture style that's all his own. on several of the tracks he incorporates tonal modalities that are actually reminiscent of fripp, which i really thought was great. this is a can't miss purchase. so excellent is this disck, that i'm now making my way through campilongo's old albums.

Just another stellar guitar record, even more varied than past releases. It just sounds so effortless to him... Orange sees Jim digging a little deeper for some growling guitar that sits perfectly alongside his tasteful country/jazz licks. Great, great album.

I purchased "Orange" primarily because Jim Campilongo is an outstanding guitar player and I like guitar oriented music. The listener will be pleasantly surprised how diverse and utterly interesting this CD is. The music stands on its own. Jim is certainly one of the most gifted players out there today. I really like every song on this CD, but "Backburner," "Awful Pretty, Pretty Awful," and "Fingerpuppet" are real standouts on first listen. Fantastic!

Think of Jim Campilongo's music as a person and you'll find that it makes a wonderful companion. On this record, you get witty conversation, surprising insights, odd digressions, lyrical emotion - comfortable things and things that are challenging. It is, in short, a nearly perfect album.

Anyone who knows me, knows i'm a Camppilongo fan i go see him at his residency on The Living Room stage on Mondays in NY when ever i can. But even if i never heard him before and put this disc on i'd think i just discovered the Atom. Orange bring's out Jim's rocker heart and still stay's true to his Tele stylings. There's 4 cover's on this one. Two that realy stick out. The Rolling Stones No Expectations sung by Lea Siegl is just plain cool. Being a Stones freak i didn't know what to expect. I was more than impressed with Iggy and The Stooges No Fun. It is a version more mellow than the original. Campy and Steph and Mase more than pull it off with Lea Siegel at vocals. All the other genre's that Jim is known for (country, blues, jazz and swing ) are still here. What a disc ! A masterpiece !

Fabulous! I love it. Jim is the best. When I was about 8 years old, me and my friends used to spend the entire summer in the local orange groves playing army. When we got hungry, we would just pick an orange and eat it. Those oranges were the best! Jim's music is complex, and just as tasty. Jim makes the Tele sound as good as I remember those oranges to be, the best!

This is a great CD. Everything Jim said it would be and more. A great listen to while driving on a trip in the car - made the trip go faster. I enjoyed this album tremendously.
