However, the juicer we ordered was literally painted (not electro-coated) with a blue paint.

This is the only lever-operated juicer that I have not been able to break up, and I have used most of them. There are no gears to break or strip, no white, base metal to crack. It's all solid stainless steel or heavy cast iron. Through a unique lever design, the force exerted on the orange at the end of the stroke is enormous. For a large orange, it will take a little muscle to complete the squeeze. For a medium, standard size orange, the force needed to complete the task is unbelievably small. I highly recommend it for professionals or those who want their fresh-squeezed OJ every morning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best juicer, April 8, 2001
By A Customer
The OrangeX squeezes the highest quality juice, with the least effort, of any manual or motorized juicer in my experience. It is heavy and tall, both of which pose storage issues. The largest size is nevertheless worth the trouble and expense, for the ability to handle large fruit such as grapefruits.

Cleanup is easy enough to encourage a several-times-a-day squeeze-as-you-drink usage pattern, ensuring the freshest possible flavor. On the other hand, squeezing a gallon for a friend to take away only takes minutes.

A side-by-side comparison of the lever motion with competing brands suggests an evolutionary advance. This is an irresistable machine for those who see beauty in engineering.

By design, it squeezes about 95% of the potential juice of a typical orange, to avoid introducing bitter rind oils. (This percentage, and the resulting flavor improvement, can be verified by experiment.) Compared with electric juicers, very little pulp ends up in the juice. With the best citrus of the season, the results can be spectacular.

The "squeeze tolerance" is not adjustable, except by an aftermarket tweak: A rubber gasket, like used on Mason jars, can be layered as a shim into the assembly to substitute for any missing thickness in the skin of a small or thin-skinned citrus, such as Key limes. This is worth doing, once one gets over any resentment at having to modify the design.

Competing models make no provision for a citrus carcass sticking to juicer parts and lifting them out with the next lever up-swing. There is a bit of "lock and key" design to the OrangeX juicer parts, intended to prevent this. However, the workmanship on this feature is sloppy, and this feature can only be enabled with finess.

5.0 out of 5 stars All you will ever need for OJ, December 30, 2000

If you've ever wanted fresh OJ in your house, this is the only way to go. Yes, this is the costliest option, but as soon as you get it, you'll understand where the money went. First of all, it's a solidly built device. You could even squeeze orange juice the old fashioned way with it, by slamming the whole thing down on the fruit and collecting the juice. This is, of course, assuming that our ancestors crushed fruit with rocks.

With the huge lever, squeezing the juice is a no brainer. Cut the fruit in half, balance it on the bottom piece, and push on down. Pull it up, throw away the remains, and get another one. We had a party where we squeezed over 60 lbs. of oranges and everyone was dying to have a go at it. One woman had to be pried away in order to give someone else a chance.

The best part about this squeezer is that there are only two pieces to wash and they pop out easily. As for the rest, just wipe it with a wet paper towel and you're done. I hated using the other electric juicers because it was such a pain to clean. You also had to worry about the engine wearing out. Here, that's no problem. As long as you can move your arm, it'll work.

If you like to buy things that'll last and that you'll actually use, go for this one. Months later, it's still a conversation piece in our kitchen, amazing friends with how cool it is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good...but great with a little oil, May 6, 2002
By

The juicer worked harder than I had hoped. My wife and I gave them as gifts to both our parents. I am strong but so the juicer worked OK, but it was not enjoyably easy.

We had relatives over and my parents brought the juicer to our house so we could treat all to fresh-squeezed.

The juicer was squeeking a little so we decided to oil it. We used cooking oil in a hand pressurized can. You could use PAM or just drip some oil in the pivots. The change was remarkable. The force for squeezing was cut in half or even more. Since the joints load up with great force at the bottom of the stroke due to the leverage, and since there are a number of pivot points, you can dramatically lower the hand pressure required with vegetable oil at all the pivots.

Small or medium oranges are best, as the largest will squish out at the edges, with the fruit still intact at the perimeter.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best juicer available, January 27, 2004
I highly recommend this juicer. I live in Florida and have a huge pink grapefriut tree as well as an orange, lemon and lime tree in my back yard. As you would expect my juicer has to be heavy duty and easy to use and clean. I have purchased and discarded most other juicers due to 1.t ook up too much counter space, 2. too flimsy, 3. too hard to clean, 4. too noisy, or 5. totally ineffective, etc. This juicer is elegant, the rack and pinion compressor will take all the juice out of medium to large fruit (small fruit you need to stack 2 high, but that's more efficient anyway). It's heavy, but not more than most juicers, and it gives you the leverage you need. I never move mine off the counter so I don't mind the weight. the easily removable cup rinses out in the sink so it's ready to reuse in a flash. It doesn't need a plug and it's quiet unlike electric models. You can fit a pint (lager) glass or a 2 cup cup measure under the spout. I must use it 3 to 4 times a day and i've had mine now for over 2 years. Big thumbs up from me!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best!, April 27, 2002

We have had this juicer for about six months. My husband is happy that this rather expensive machine has been so useful.
We make a killer Cosmo using fresh citrus juice. We also mix sparkling mineral water with the juice for a very refreshing drink. I have found the medium sized oranges work the best. If the orange is to big juice squirts out the side.

The Orange-X large size commercial juicer, in silver, is easy to use and efficient in its juicing capabilities. There is very little to clean and the manual operation allows for juicing anywhere at anytime.
If you love fresh squeezed O.J., and you don't mind an initial expenditure that is somewhat costly, you will be blessed with an appliance that will provide you with delicious, daily, fresh juice.
I heartily recommend this item to those of us who love fresh squeezed orange juice.

1.0 out of 5 stars Paint particles -- part of a balanced diet?, April 3, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Orange-X Large-Size Commercial Juicer, Blue (Kitchen)
This machine is built like a Russian tank - what it lacks in finesse it tries to make up for in sheer bulk. But the massive, retro-industrial design is not enough to earn a place on your countertop. My juicer arrived with several dings in the paint. The stainless steel dome that the fruit is crushed on had a black greasy substance on the underside. It took a lot of scouring to get rid of this material of unknown toxicity. The shape of the squeezing surfaces is conical rather than hemispherical. The effect of this is that the discarded rind always includes some unsqueezed pulp. But the worst feature of the unit I received is that two of the painted surfaces of the mechanism rub against each other during use causing a fine powder of paint flecks to fall into the juice. The toxicity of these paint flecks is unknown to me but I sure don't want to ingest them. It's going back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh orange juice while my trip to Germany, August 26, 2000
By
James A Malloy (Simi Valley, CA United States) - See all my reviews
I was traveling in europe on business and one morning I had breakfast at the hotel. I walked up to the buffet and was looking for some orange juice. Being in Germany, I could not speak with anyone but I noticed an apparatus with a bowl of oranges next to it. As I closed in I saw a juice cup underneath and a cutting board with a knife.

From there on became obvious what I needed to do to get some orange juice. As I cut my first orange in half, I was thinking that maybe I would have to use all the oranges in the bowl. As I squeezed the first half of my orange, I was amazed about the amount of juice came out. It only took two regular size oranges to fill a large juice glass with fresh squeezed orange juice. All I had to do was to throw away the squeezed orange halves. No fuss at all. As I finished breakfast, I thought I would try it one more time and it was very easy to have the second glass.

When I got home from the trip, I bought a bag of oranges and decided to get my juicer out and have some fresh orange juice for me and my wife. I paid $50 for the one I have and it is a high speed motor type that has sharp cutters spinning to cut the orange up. It does separate the pulp from the juice. When I got done juicing a whole bag I was dissapointed to see a little amount of juice and a big mess to clean up. Also when I tasted the juice it was bitter because some of the orange rind was in the juice.

I am buying the orange-x today and cannot wait to get it home to start enjoying sweet fresh orange juice.
