This review is from: Ora's Farm (Hardcover)
I am lucky to have this lovely man as my friend for 40 years. When I was a young girl, my Dad would take me to Ora's to see the animals in the late 1960's. We live about 2 miles from his farm. Our families have known each other for over 60 years. Ora gave goats milk to my my grandfather,a diabetic, when it was hard to find at the time, and expensive during the war years.
Ora is everything the book describes him to be. Although, I think I should have written my experiences before Ms.Carter. It was if she was telling my story, to an extent. It is a fine book, very well written. The quotes within it's pages are 'pure Ora' He absolutely says things just as she writes. He's portrayed as a kindly farmer, nearly saintlike status, Again,I have known him much longer and like all of us, he's only human. I think his capacity for deep emotion and compassion, stems from being a war veteran ( he was in the Army in World War 11 ) I saw him get madder n' hell one afternoon. Just one glance with those flashing sapphire blue eyes can put you in your place.. I had found a photo of him as a young man,in his army uniform, he didn't want to talk about that part of his life. Therefore, he was somewhat irritated at my snooping! Can't blame him too much. He also had movie star good looks as a young man. He was very beautiful and I told him so..and he blushed. He calmed down and hugged me tightly, as only Ora can do in his special way. He then told me that he loved me very much. I almost fainted! I melted in his strong arms..dreamy.. I hadn't seen him in many years, after reading the book, I went for a visit. He opened the door, and his eyes begin to fill up a bit, and like the quote in the book about meeting his father in heaven, he asked me, " Chris? What took you so long? " He hugged me so hard,it took my breath, then unable to contain my emotion any longer, told him,I still loved him very much! with his lilting southern accent, he told me he still loved me too I'll not leave him again. Thanks be to God for him. He saved me from myself when I needed it most. Since we are both of the Irish, I will say to him in the old Irish, " Bail O Dhia Ort " or in English, " The blessings of God on you, my beautiful friend'

I enjoyed the book because I could relate to it beingbrought up on a small farm back in the late 30s and early 40's. The children had their problems like we did many years ago and things turned out ok. I loved the illustrations too. I read Stephen Moon and the author certainly express her self well. She's a good writer.

Wish I had read this book as a young girl...,

This review is from: Ora's Farm (Hardcover)
I enjoyed Ora's Farm so much. I read it on a Saturday afternoon outside on my deck sipping coffee. When I finished it, I took a deep breath, relaxed and watched the birds for another 1/2 hour, contemplating the lessons Ora taught his young friends.I bought 2 extra copies as gifts. One for a 12 year old who has divorced parents and one for my son who is 21 and has had some dramatic changes in his life for the past 2 years. Ora's Farm reminded me of what is important in life. Sometimes we all need that. This would have been a memorable and significant reading for me as a young girl, too. I would have been a little easier on myself had I realized other children had fears and difficulties just like I did. I thought the illustrations were beautiful and really helped bring the characters to life.

i thought ora's farm dealt with real life issues kids have today. so many children in the world have problems in their life but do not know where to turn for a friend. this books gives a child a warm feeling that there are adults that do listen and care about kids and their problems. it shows kids that there are outlets in the world to voice their fustrations. it is hard being a kid today and fitting in. this book shows how children can have problems and deal with them. it is very hearwarming to find an author that can relate to children withput making them feel insignifant. the story made me feel so inspired to want to help somebody.

What a lovely book for everyone!,
This review is from: Ora's Farm (Hardcover)
I am loaning this book to my sister to read to her children, and when I first picked up the book, I didn't necessarily think it was a "childrens' book"! But what great life lessons, and beautiful illustrations. Not every child will be lucky enough to have someone like Ora in their lives, be it their grandparents or perhaps an older neighbor, but all children - and adults -need these life lessons. Can't wait to reread it and start quoting Ora. And when I can't sleep, instead of counting sheep I will take Ora's advice and count my blessings!
