Programming was not too difficult when I finally forgot everything I thought I knew from my old timer. If you can understand what you read in the manual...programming is a breeze...but you must pay attention as some functions must be programed at each station. I am extremely pleased with the product !
Installation: When I removed my old Hunter irrigation box, there were 3 wires (hot, neutral, & ground) that provided power to the irrigation timer by an outside electrical box. When I took the Orbit out of the box, there was a cord that you could plug into an inside outlet or an outside GFI. In the simple instructions that were provided with the box, it directs you to visit the Orbit website to download the full set of directions to install the box without using the plug in option on how it is made and packaged from the manufacture. The directions tell you to cut the cord to the desired length to expose the 3 wires within the cord so they can be married to the electrical box. I had a bad feeling that where wasn't a ground wire since there wasn't a ground connection to the end of the plug (3 prongs). Once I cut the wire and removed the protective sleeve around the wires, sure enough, there wasn't a ground wire as described and illustrated in the downloadable manufacture directions; only the hot and neutral wires. Since I was installing the box on a weekend and the help line to call Orbit was closed, so I called up my local hardware store and they said I can just abandon the ground wire that came from my electrical box and only use the 2 wires provided. The associate said since the Orbit box is sealed from outside moisture with the cover, he did not see a reason why the irrigation box needed to be grounded.Read more ›
I sought advice from Chuck on the Orbit Support team as to whether this Orbit 4 station timer model 57894-20 can replace a faulty mechanical Intermatic timer on my existing single indexing valve, 3 zone lawn sprinkler system and the logic to use when setting it up. I emailed their support and received a reply in 1 day -- I also called with a follow[on question and Chuck picked up the phone on the 2nd ring! He was very informative and willing to help get me going! Great customer service experience!.
It's programming is simple yet effective and does all that I need a 4 zone timer to do (In my case I actually only needed to set up 3 zones --> hint: you just don't set up the 4th zone and the timer skips it).
- Seems well made and of good quality
- easy set up - the panel swings out of the way to access the wiring
- Plug n go -- I ran a 2 conductor, 18 Gauge thermostat wire through the cinderblock and mounted the unit in the garage away from the elements and simply plugged it into a 110V outlet (you could also wire it for ourdoor use if so desired)
- helpful and timely customer support
- Fair price for what you get
- A slight negative is that you have to hold down the up or down arrow to get to the start time that you want (the clock time change starts slow and while it does speed up, it still takes a while to get from the default 12pm to the start time you want. If you set the start time for 4 zones your finger will get tired -- luckily you only have to do this process when initially setting up the timer. Not a show stopper but an area for improvement.Read more ›
Customer support said it might be due to bad actuators and I tested the lines at the end that goes into the unit and all had enough resistance as they said to check for and all work with the old controller. Perhaps if all the old actuators (3 new and 3 old) were replaced it would work, but replacing working actuators in order to possibly make it work isn't very appealing. So I'm not sure if the unit was bad or I have one or more problems elsewhere. Sent back and put the old one back on the wall.
4 stars since the programming on this is easy and things like the manual rain delay is nice. I was going to add an automatic rain sensor as well, but didn't get the chance.
