The new product is similar to the old model. I have been using the old model for a few years now. Seriously - about 5-6 years all told.
I spent more than most of you might, due to my setup, which I will explain further below.
I also bought multiple valves, more than one timer, new rubber washers, additional hoses, quick connect sets
Orbit Brass Hose Quick Connect Set 58117 and some assorted plumbing items. All told - approximately $200+, but still way cheaper than an underground system.
I took a piece of plywood and mounted the controllers to it, mounted the manifolds to it and then pieced together my piping parts (1/2" galvanized) to put together a 'system'. I also connected a device that absorbs the pressure when the vales shut off to avoid the hammer effect.
The system starts at the faucet with the hammer stopper, then runs through a small (2-3') of hose, which connects to my piping solution mounted on the plywood. The connection then splits off 3 times.
The 1st split goes to a ball valve which ends in a 'Y' connector to two faucet ends, which have quick connects on them. this allows me to use a spare garden hose for whatever purpose I might need - washing the car, the sidewalk, filling the pool, or spraying my kids :-) as the mood strikes.
The 2nd split runs to a ball valve and a manifold, which ends in the actual water vales, which then end in quick connectors as well. This makes hooking things up much easier - oh, use the metal ones. I then connect the hoses to these, then plug them into the controller, which is mounted on this same piece of wood.
The 3rd split runs to a different set much like the 2nd. This is used for a different portion of the lawn, that requires a different watering style and arrangement.
If one wanted to, one could just utilize more controllers based on how many different styles of watering patterns one needs. The costs are much cheaper than a whole in-ground system, and the fixing of the leaks or failure to function is really pretty simple, at least in my opinion.
If anyone want to see the setup I use, I would be glad to send a picture, just ask.
I also have a bit of a leak with a couple of valves, but the vales are a bit old, and were not brought in in time.
Also, the board I use to mount everything on is also screwed to mounting brackets connected to my house, but this allows me to just drain the pipes then unhook everything, disconnect it then put it in my garage for next year, as it freezes here.
If I have left anything, you may wish to know, out please ask.
(edited 9/4/2012)***NOTE***PLEASE***READ*** Be aware please, that my personal setup is comprised of the older version of this same sort of product. It is the older White colored version, so please note this detail. I simply hope that you can use my suggestions to stimulate you to create your own version of a system at a cost beneficial price.
