We purchased the Orbit Infant Car Seat G2 System for our daughter (who is now six months old as I am writing this review). It looked so sleek, modern and functional. I love the stroller, the diaper bag, the addition of the panniers is awesome and I have the accessories which work well, BUT both my daughter and I have grown to hate the infant car seat. First of all, I will tell you the positives: the rotation base is very convenient; the sun shade is awesome; the materials are top notch; the accessories (bug cover and rain cover) are very nice; and the built-in cover is wonderful (it keeps baby sheltered from the elements). Okay, now to the reasons we dislike it. It is extremely narrow and deep. This means if you have a larger than average child (mine is in the 70th percentiles for height and weight) she will not fit comfortably in it for very long. As a newborn to about 6 weeks, she was okay with it. After that, she started to scream bloody murder, because her shoulders were scrunched by the narrow width and she hated that she really couldn't see out (it's just so deep and the sides are straight--safe, but isolating). It became a battle every time we had to go somewhere. (Please note that I even took out the head support and did not add any additional products (i.e., a piddle pad, etc.)). I thought perhaps she just didn't like being in ANY car seat, so I tested the theory: I bought another car seat (Chicco) and put her in it without any protests. She immediately smiled when she realized she could actually see out of the thing. Sigh. I was so bummed to have spent the money on the Orbit and have her hate it (and then to have to buy another--doh!). I still have the stroller chassis and I use it with the Orbit Baby toddler stroller seat (which I love and so does my daughter).Read more ›

Baby sits too deep and can't see outside the seat. Also the head support for a newborn seems inadequate .

The only down side to this seat is the size of it on the base! It takes up so much room that unless you have a truck or HUGE suv the front seats will be in the dashboard!

We bought this car seat for the sole reason that it was the only one on the market with a fabric certification saying it was free of many harmful flame retardants. But then it scored poorly on toxicity when tested by healthstuff.org. What gives?

Well, I still thought the certification must mean something, and that maybe the single healthystuff.org test was just a fluke, so we stuck with this seat to replace our original Chicco Keyfit 30, which was emitting a smell like fireworks. In comparison to the Keyfit though, it fit our daughter really poorly. Her chin was always sitting on her chest. It didn't position her nearly as well as the Keyfit.

Can someone please produce a non-toxic Keyfit?? The swivel action of the seat is very convenient but I wouldn't pay $400 just for that.

Why I like it...
Organic material, attractive, great sunshade, easy installation, rotatable and SAFE. I hear many complaints about its depth, heaviness, and weight. Yes, I do struggle to carry it and I am no weakling. BUT, the depth and bulkiness is also what makes it so much safer. It offers more protection surrounding baby and the weight is great for sitting on different surfaces because it is less likely to fall(of course I'm still careful).

What I don't like...
My baby is now 13 lbs and 23 inches long. Her head just recently keeps popping out of the head pads. I roll too blankets on each side which helps. I'm worried that she is gonna outgrow it well before 30 lbs!

TIP....for easier transportation try carrying by the side handles. It feels so much lighter when I do this!

I love this seat sadly my baby hates it. The rotating aspect of this car seat (if you have the base as without it this seat is useless), is AMAZING. I don't know how I'd get my baby in the seat sideways. It has a nice recline so my baby's head doesn't slump forward when she falls asleep. At a year old and 17 lbs she is still using it. Her feet are too long but the straps still fit. I bought this because it was one of the only 'green' options as I didn't want my baby to be laying in flame retardant toxic crap for hours on end (we live in LA). I am hesitant to buy the toddler version of this as I heard orbit stopped using the 'green' fabric and is now also using toxic crap. Also it's insanely expensive. Rotating aspect though- priceless!

We did a ton of research on car seats and the entire stroller system. We were very excited for the orbit system. We ordered everything. But we made an appointment with the car sear lady(amazing NICU doc in NYC who for a very reasonable amount of money will install and teach you how to properly use the car seat) to install the infant car seat in our SUV (we have the X5 which is a really big car) and the seat was too big for the middle. About 40% of the seat hung over the edge, which is not safe. And the drivers seat could not move back without hitting the car seat, which didn't work for us since my husband is 6'5. We were hugely disappointed. While we could have placed the car seat behind the passenger seat, our first priority is safety and all of the tests show that the middle seat is safest for infant car seats. So we had to return the entire system and start over with the uppa baby and the cybex Aton seat, which now fits perfectly in the middle. Such a bummer because all of the orbit products seemed so much better made but they really need to focus on design and practicality with the car seat.
