5.0 out of 5 stars Best live Harlow recording, March 27, 2009
This review is from: Orchestra Harlow Live in Quad (Audio CD)
This magnificent concert captured live at Sing Sing prison in upstate new York was the first and only quadraphonic recording ever made for Salsa. While it would have been nice for this one to be re-released in a multi-channel format, stereo is what we got. At any rate it's still a formidable live set from the band. The remastering is loud but adequate. I had the original Quad LP back in '74 and other than it not being a 4 channel recording it still sounds pretty good. Musically the band couldn't sound better. Junior Gonzalez,Justo Betancourt and Adalberto Santiago share vocals and they are in top form with a very appreciative if captive audience. The brass is simply amazing and the rhythm section as off the hook. Excellent songs by the likes of Arsenio Rodriguez connect Harlow to the cuban bands that inspired him. This is one for the history books and highly recommended now. Viva Harlow!

This review is from: Live in Quad (Audio CD)
In my opinion the greatest recording in the history of the genera. The musicians & voices are great, especially Junior Gonzalez's renditions of "La Cartera", "Sen~or Sereno", and Justo Betancourt's Mayari is A!.
a must have in any Salsa collection...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a Gem! Obra Maestra!, May 10, 2001

This review is from: Live in Quad (Audio CD)
A remarkable record! Now that some of the most talented Cuban musicians are seasoning us with classical expressions of Caribbean music, this record makes more sense than ever. "El Maestro" Larry Harlow has compiled some of the most talented musicians of our time to deliver the most interconnected Caribean music ever. From the old Son Montuno to the new Salsa and Guaguanco, this record delicately explores and discovers the rhythms of the Caribbean. You can actually taste the notes, instruments and feelings of the interpreters in this recording. As a deep sea diver amazes when finding the most bountiful treasure, you will feel amaze when your senses hear the music and rhythms in this live recording. It has so much taste, color and beat that you will always play it one more time. It is the beginning but never the end. From its first remarkable composition Senor Sereno to Mayari, it brakes the time barrier from Son Montuno to modern Salsa. It explores the past without invading it. It mingles with it, but always looking forward. "Es la Obra Maestra de Harlow." It is a Gem!

Remember, when you hear this music that some of the musicians have been members of the elite "Fania All Stars" ensemble. At the time the recording was made, Mr. Harlow had put together, to what many considered, the Best Salsa Band Ever!

Listen very close....You'll even actually see the notes.
