This is an absolutely wonderful package! I have a large percentage of all commercial recordings of the Poulenc Organ Concerto and this is clearly the best for location, recording and production technique as well as the performance. The balance between full cathedral ambiance and intimate frontal detail is perfect. The hall's replete reverbation never washes out the musical detail. The performance is intense, passionate and imaginative yet Dutoit and the soloists never venture so far from the musical core and clarity of the pieces that things ever get confused or wayward. Tempos are never too fast or too slow. Dutoit seems to be the master of modern French orchestral music. Rather than the boxed set, the concerto recordings alone also seem to be available Piano & Organ Concertos

Though there are many very good recordings, the only other contender for the "perfect" rendition of the Organ Concerto that I've heard in my opinion would be the lesser known Polish Tarnow Orchestra recording Concertos for Organ and Orchestra Whereas the Dutoit version is very full bodied and expansive, the Tarnow orchestra is much smaller and very nimble - approaching the sound and feeling of a chamber orchestra which works very well for this piece. The detail and intimacy is also superb.

Mr. Clemson's review is far more nuanced than I can be. It's worth a quick read.

For my part I really enjoy the collection. The recording quality is quite good and there are a whole bunch of selections that made me stop what I was doing and simply listen.

What really struck me is how fresh and contemporary Poulenc sounds in 2013. My listening habits drift towards Jazz and R&B, yet I felt right at home simply letting this CD play through. So it's money well spent, a bit of a musical revelation and a marvelous addition to my collection.

This outstanding survey of Poulenc's orchestral music also includes a disc of superb choral music and a disc of works for small ensembles. The Orchestre National de France under Charles Dutoit produce some delicious sounds and bring just the right lightness of touch to these colorful scores. Pascal Roge, Sylviane Deferne, and Peter Hurford handle the soloist duties in fine versions of the concertos. I am not a huge fan of the music on the fourth disc, but the quality of the other four discs in the set is terrific. Notes are included and at bargain price this is probably the finest introduction to Poulenc you will find.
