Book Description

May 7, 1998
The first ever comprehensive guide to the techniques of orchestral playing and the development of non-professional orchestras. Covering all areas of orchestral music-making--instrument technique and combination, ensemble, layout, repertoire and presentation--Christopher Adey explores the responsibilities of both players and conductor, exposing many of the inadvertent results of interpretation with regard to sound and projection, and broadening the musical communication to which the less experienced orchestra can aspire. Written in a lively and authoritative style, this is a book that should be read by performing musicians of all standards, instrumental teachers and aspiring conductors, and all who have any dealings with the performance of youth or student orchestras throughout the world, as well as anyone interested in what orchestral performance entails.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is a unique book from the pen of a distinguished musician whose experience both as orchestral musician and conductor provides a sensitive insight into the techniques and artistry involved in creating memorable performances. Christopher Adey's searching and comprehensive survey poses an answers the most important questions about a wide repertoire. As the lucky recipient of performances of my own music by the author I am well placed to recommend it as essential reading for all who love the orchestra and its music." -- Edwin Rodburgh

5.0 out of 5 stars A thorough guide for conductors and instrumentalists, July 2, 2000
This review is from: Orchestral Performance: A Guide for Conductors and Players (Paperback)
Christopher Adey's Orchestral Performance is an outstanding compendium, guide and reference book for all musicians interested in instrumental playing and conducting. This guide is laid out in a clear, concise, and sequential manner which comprehensively addresses every issue relevant to conducting (or playing), including; instrumental technique, performance, rehearsing, orchestral layout, transposition, and the physics of instruments. A highly recommended book which can be read all the way through (some 860 pages) or used for reference purposes. Thank you, Mr. Adey!

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring, December 30, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Orchestral Performance: A Guide for Conductors and Players (Paperback)
This is a pedantic book that might have some appeal to academics, but it seems to me repetitive and almost useless for serious and accomplished professionals. I also found it a difficult read, lacking in cohesion.
